8 Video Game moments that made you cry

However tough a person may seem, somewhere inside they all have an emotional side. Video games are no less than movies in making you cry with their innovating way of telling stories and evoking emotions in us. Here’s a list of some of the most intense, passionate, and emotional ugly-cry moments in gaming . SPOILER ALERT for those who are yet to play these games.

#8 Assassins Creed: Revelations - Altairs Passing

Looking for Crossword hints & solutions? Check out latest NYT Mini Crossword Answers, LA Times Crossword Answers, and Atlantic Crossword Answers

Altair was the original protagonist of the first Assassin's Creed game who fought the Templars during the Third Crusade. Altair shapes most of the events of Ezio's trilogy by providing him with codex and artifacts that contain information given to him by the Apple of Eden.

In Revelations, we finally get to see more of Altair's life played out before us, and it isn't much. The main reason for this, is Altair devoted his life to studying to Apple and it's prophecies. He grew old protecting these secrets, knowing that one day, these secrets would lead Ezio and Desmond to fight the Templars. At the end of Revelations, an old and wary Altair bids farewell to his son and enters his hidden study, where he finally places the Apple of Eden on a pedestal. He then mutters to himself "I will sit and rest for a moment" as he sits down. Altair passes of old age in this moment, the most emotional moment of the entire series.

#7 Final Fantasy VII - Aeris Death

You're Cloud, standing in the middle of an ancient city, surrounded by crystals and conch shells and crystallized conch shells. Your hair is irresponsibly spiky. Before you kneels Aeris, that flower girl you're sort of kind of crushing on. Her eyes are closed. She's praying. Suddenly down comes Sephiroth with his giant sword pointed directly at Aeris's back and— oh. Oh god. She's dead.

The camera slows down. You watch her body crumple as she falls to the ground. Only thing you can hear is a thumping heartbeat. You're paralyzed. She's not really dead, is she? She can't be. You want to cry. Not yet.

A white orb falls from her body and starts soaring up, then arcing down. Camera follows. The orb falls toward one of the nearby pedestals. Slowly. Gently hits the ground with a clink. Then Theme music plays which is truely emotional.

#6 The Walking Dead - Lee\'s Death and Clementine\'s Decision

emotional moments

Most zombie games go for gory shocks over psychological hardships, but most zombie games aren't Telltale's The Walking Dead. The first season follows a man named Lee, a little girl named Clementine, and the (usually short-lived) survivors they encounter as they try to escape a zombie apocalypse.

In season one you’d follow Lee and Clementine around for five episodes, giving Lee your own personality and investing your hopes and dreams in him and the rag tag band of survivors he leads. So when the final episode comes around and… “SPOILERS”… Lee gets bit, you know it is going to end horribly. But when Clem stands in front of him and you are given the choice to let her pull the trigger or not, that’s when the tears start flowing, and that’s why this game gets on our list.

#5 Gears Of War 3 - Doms Sacrifice

That in itself is a very moving moment, but it’s in part three following the brief respite of the COG soldiers making it out onto a civilian ship – only to be plunged back into the fight – that Dom decides he’s had enough.

Realising that him and his comrades are soon going be overrun by enemy forces, he forgoes goodbyes for the sake of driving a tanker full of gasoline into the structure you’re attempting to defend – taking out the entire opposition in the process. Looking to the sky, with his final words of “Never thought it’d end like this, huh Maria?” and a reprise of Gary Jules’ Mad World playing underneath, it was a very touching moment in a game chock-full of blockbuster action.

#4 Mass Effect 3 - Mordin Solus Sacrifice

This was an incredibly hard choice because the entirety of Mass Effect 3 is just basically crying and depression through most of it. Whether it be a character’s end, or just the end of the story, there are plenty of moments worthy of making this list.

At the top of that list, is one of my favourite characters in any video game out there, Mordin Solus. The man who helped design and spread one of the deadliest viruses in the entire universe, spends his final moments to try and stop that very same virus, all because of his new found friends and clearer sense of his repercussions. What makes it hurt so much more, is that there was no convincing him to do so, he willingly went through with his choice, with a smile on his face to the end. We always knew Mordin would do the best for science, but this time he did the best for the people. Singing that song that endeared us to him in the second game all the way to his end. All while we sit and watch, tears in our eyes, as we say goodbye to our beloved friend.

An honorary mention goes to Thane’s prayer of salvation, and Legion’s “Does this unit have a soul” moment.

#3 Silent Hill: Shattered Memories - Harry\'s True Identity

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was released primarily on the Wii just too late in the generation for a third-party title to make waves. If you skipped it, then you missed out on the best Silent Hill in years. And you also missed out on crying a whole bunch. Because the game will make you cry at least as much as it will make you shiver in fear.

In this you search throughout the entire game for your daughter after a horrible car crash. You meet people who die right in front of you, run through nightmare worlds filled with horrible manifestations of your own psychology, and eventually find your way to an abusive psychologist’s office only to find that you don’t exist. You are dead. You are a specter haunting your daughter who has grown up without you all these years. You can’t save your daughter because the car crash tore you from her all those many years ago.

#2 The Last Of Us - Sarahs Death

Choosing your favorite scene from The Last of Us is akin to selecting your favourite flavour of pizza. Granted, there’s often no out-and-out right answer. But yet there were some heart wrenching moments in the game.

The most emotional had to be this- where the soldier draws fire on Joel and Sarah on the outskirts of the town. We begin to realise that this is a pivotal scene in The Last of Us’ narrative. A lost, broken father holding his dead daughter in his hands will always be heart wrenching, but it’s a testimony to Troy Baker’s raw, heartfelt voice acting that we feel that explicit sense of emotional attachment a mere fifteen minutes into the game.

As a prelude, not only did this heartbreaking sequence provide a crucial glimpse into Joel’s past, it also painted a harrowing picture of the Cordyceps-infested world we were about to venture into.

#1 Metal Gear Solid 3 - The Bosss True Purpose

For the number one spot it’s that moment that made us want to go hug someone, or at least dive online to make sure we weren’t the only ones who had gotten through a box of tissues. The majesty of Hideo Kojima‘s storytelling in MGS3 has made it one of – if not the – finest entries in the franchise overall, with one of the greatest rug-pulls there’s ever been in terms of final plot-twists topping it all off. That being – in summary – The Boss’ final mission to die by Snake’s hand, taking all the blame both from America and Russia for the nuclear blast one evil Colonel Volgin had set off. Metal Gear Solid 3 ends with your character saluting and shedding manly Tears at the grave of his mother figure/special ops mentor/love interest.
