The fake sky theory in Genshin Impact has been hinted at multiple times over the years. Ever since the game's inception, the theory has cropped up in various quests and character dialogues. While it was only hinted at and never fully explored, that's all changed with the release of the Natlan Archon Quest.

This article discusses the theory in Genshin Impact and explains how you can actually spot the fake sky in the game.

The fake sky theory has been in existence ever since Genshin Impact was released in 2020. It was first mentioned by Scaramouche (now known as Wanderer) in version 1.1 of the game, as part of the Unreconciled Stars event. His specific words were:

"The stars, the sky... It's all a gigantic hoax. A lie."

This was the first instance of the fake sky being mentioned in Genshin Impact. This theory expands on what Scaramouche said and maintains that the sky surrounding Teyvat is some sort of illusion.

The fake sky theory was mentioned a second time by the Fatui Harbinger Dottore during the Sumeru Archon quest. In a conversation with the Dendro Archon Nahida, this is what Dottore had to say:

"Let me ask you... Have you in all your mighty knowledge ever heard the rumor that the skies of Teyvat are fake? That's the secret hidden by Irminsul concerning the 'truth' of this world..."

Nothing else was mentioned about the fake sky theory after this interaction, that is until the latest Natlan Archon Quest.

In the latest installment of the Natlan Archon Quest 'The Rainbow Destined to Burn', Pyro Archon Mavuika punches the sky to stop the onslaught of monsters emerging through the Abyssal portal. As she does this, the entire section of the sky falls apart. This creates a gaping hole and reveals the actual sky outside, where fragments of a broken moon can be seen.

This finally confirms the fake sky theory that had only been hinted at all this while. Now that the theory is no longer just a hypothesis, more information about it should be revealed in future quests/updates.

Location and how to spot the fake sky in Genshin Impact

Fragments of the broken moon from where Mavuika punched a hole in the sky can still be seen even after the Natlan Archon Quest has ended.

To spot it, teleport to any waypoint near the western border of the Natlan map and look towards the sky. Zoom in using the Kamera, and you will spot a half-visible silhouette of the broken moon fragments in the sky.
