Silk in Ghost of Tsushima is needed to craft upgrades for Jin Sakai's armors. This title might not be a role-playing game in the traditional sense, but it does borrow plenty of mechanics from the RPG genre, such as a tier-based upgrade system, distinct main story, and side quests, as well as percentage-based perks. The game also supports build crafting and encourages different playstyles based on perks and bonuses.
As you progress through the main story, you'll find yourself unlocking multiple outfits for Jin Sakai, most of which feature several tiers of upgrades. These upgrades not only increase their primary perk's effectiveness but also bolster their base defensive capabilities.
To get those later-tier upgrades, however, you'll need resources like Silk, which is arguably the rarest upgrade material in the game. Fortunately, there's an easy way to grab plenty of silk in Ghost of Tsushima to upgrade, nearly all the outfits in the game, in a single playthrough.
