Ghost of Tsushima PC is easily one of Nixxes Software's best efforts on PC to date, which is saying a lot considering the stellar quality of the studio's previous titles. However, like any other PC release, Ghost of Tsushima isn't entirely devoid of issues, with some players reporting framerate hitches, stuttering, freezing, and even crashing issues with the game.

Much like the previous PlayStation 5 to PC titles, i.e., God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, and most recently, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima PC is a visual powerhouse. While the game already looked leagues ahead of the competition on the PlayStation system, it now looks even more incredible on PC.

That said, to deliver those visuals, you'll need a beefy enough system. Unfortunately, due to the lack of a VRAM counter, it's easy for players to push the game further than their GPU's limits, which eventually results in crashes. Here are some possible fixes and reasons for Ghost of Tsushima PC's crashing errors.

Possible fixes for crashing error in Ghost of Tsushima PC

Ghost of Tsushima PC is overall a pretty great PC port. However, much like other Nixxes titles, it does exhibit some memory leak issues that manifest into either micro-stutters the longer you play the game, or crashes, depending on the amount of VRAM you have available. There's also a bug with the "Frame-generation" option that can result in crashes.

While the most obvious option would be to wait for Nixxes to release a title update for the game to remedy these issues, there are a few things that you can do right now to potentially fix the crashing error.

Here are a few things to try out in Ghost of Tsushima PC to potentially remedy the crashing error:

1) Disable Frame-generation

The frame-generation tool is incredibly useful if it's used in tandem with properly optimized graphics settings. However, in Ghost of Tsushima, Frame-generation currently seems to have some issues, especially on the Nvidia GPUs, where it results in the game crashing within just a few minutes of gameplay. On AMD GPUs, this issue isn't as common.

As such, I'd highly recommend keeping Frame-generation off until Nixxes provides a proper fix for the issue.

2) Reduce Texture Quality and other settings

Ghost of Tsushima is an incredibly detailed game, with high-resolution texture work, and best-in-class particle physics simulation. However, if you don't have enough GPU power to spare, the game might crash without any warning, if it exceeds the VRAM limit. As such, it's best to lower your settings first if you're facing any crashing or freezing issues with the game.

The most impactful options when it comes to VRAM are Texture Quality, Volumetrics, and Terrain Quality.

3) Verify the game's files via Steam

Lastly, if nothing else fixes the crashing issues you're facing with Ghost of Tsushima PC, then I highly recommend verifying the game's files via Steam. That way you won't have to uninstall and reinstall the game in case some files got corrupted or damaged during download. Verifying game files on Steam is a fairly straightforward process.

  • Launch Steam > Click on Library.
  • Right-click on Ghost of Tsushima from the list of games in your Steam library.
  • Click on Properties > Go to Local Files.
  • Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
  • It will take some time while Steam checks for the missing components in the game's directory.
  • Once done, launch the game.

It also goes without saying that you should have your graphics drivers and operating system firmware up to date to alleviate any potential issues with the game.
