God of War Ragnarok's PC port is quite good, which isn't a surprise considering the quality of the previous PC offerings from Sony. However, while the game's overall port quality is impeccable, when it comes to performance and scalability across different hardware configurations, it's not immune to its fair share of issues, especially regarding controller connectivity.

The title has native support for both DualSense as well as Xbox controllers. However, there have been plenty of reports from players who were unable to get their controllers to work out-of-the-box with God of War Ragnarok. In fact, the "controller not working" error is more prevalent for players using Xbox controllers via Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless.

Thankfully, there's a pretty easy fix for the controller errors in Sony's latest PC offering. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to fix the controller not working error in God of War Ragnarok's PC version.

Potential fixes for controller not working error in God of War Ragnarok PC

The controller issues in God of War Ragnarok aren't exclusive to Sony's recent release on the platform. Even titles like the critically acclaimed sequel to Warhammer 40K Space Marine launched with a poor implementation of controller support, especially on PC. However, the workaround to getting Space Marine 2 to work with a controller was quite easy.

You essentially had to disable Steam Input within Steam's controller settings, and voila! your controller was all good to go for Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2. Unsurprisingly, the same trick helps with the controller issues in God of War Ragnarok, albeit, only if you're using an Xbox (or Xinput) controller.

You can disable/enable Steam Input using the following steps:

  • Within the Steam desktop app, click on the Steam option on the top left.
  • Go to Steam > Settings > Controllers.
  • Within the Controller settings, scroll down to find the option - Enable Steam Input for Xbox controllers.
  • The box is checked by default if you have a Xinput controller connected to your PC.
  • Uncheck the Steam Input option, and restart the Steam app.
  • Launch the game with the controller plugged in or connected via Bluetooth.

On top of this, you can install the Xbox extended feature support driver, which is an option available exclusively for Xbox controllers. Installing these drivers requires a full system restart, but it usually ends up rectifying all issues with controllers on Steam.

Meanwhile, if you're using a DualShock 4, DualSense, or Nintendo Switch Pro controller, you can rectify the controller not working error by connecting it with a USB cable, directly to your PC. Developers Jetpack Interactive and Santa Monica Studios have already acknowledged the controller-related issues exhibited by God of War Ragnarok on PC.

Most of these issues will be addressed in a future title update. However, until said update is live on Steam, the Steam Input trick should help as a temporary fix for the issue.
