What this current generation of video games seriously lacks is a good quality single-player role-playing game with the likes of old school Bioware titles such as Dragon Age or Mass Effect series. That is because the AAA developers have focused their attention on making more bigger open-world games filled with activities to do which are more feasible to a wider audience.
Since true role-playing games ain't the flavour of tea for everyone, it's hard to find such games being developed by AAA studios nowadays. Thankfully smaller studios like Obisidian Entertainment or Spiders are trying to fill in the void left over by big hefty game developing studios such as Bioware or Bethesda.
Greedfall is one such game that is out early next month and has the potential to be the sleeper hit of 2019 if everything we have seen so far is any indication. So here is everything you need to know about studios Spiders' incredibly ambitious action RPG Greedfall -

#1 Story
Greedfall takes you back into the 17th century when the Colonial Era was in full swing. The world of Greedfall is covered with a never-ending Malichore plague and the cure to this contagious disease lies in the magical island of Teer Fradee, a lost paradise.
Player's character, which is a human diplomat, will travel across the stunningly beautiful Teer Fradee, fighting mythical creatures and finding the cure of the plague while also deciding which one of the multitudes of foreign factions to side with or support the locales.
Players can craft their own character, either male or female, and choose from three distinct starting classes which are-Warrior, Technical and Mage, and take up two companions along with them through their journey.
Players decisions will affect the game's story and the journey accordingly and the game has supposedly four different types of endings to offer.
#2 Quests & Companions
Greedfall is probably the first game to feature no fetch quests. The game offers a total of 80 quests, each of them connected via some narrative threads and is meaty. Greedfall is a relatively shorter adventure than most open-world RPGs out there which is also a breath of fresh air. According to various playtesters, the game clocks around 30-40 hours by the time you finish most of the side quests and the main story.
Just like in Bioware games, Greedfall features plenty of companions that one take along with them during their journey. Some of these companions are - Siora - who is a native of Teer Fradee, Kurt - a young charming warrior, Afra - a scientist who specializes in ranged weaponry such as rifles and bombs, Petrus - a father-like figure who will take one out of controversial situations by the help of his sharp tongue, and Vasco - captain of a ship who is the most secretive of all the companions.
The companions in Greedfall all have different motives to tag along with one's character and will react accordingly to the decisions taken by the main protagonist. They also, unfortunately, can turn hostile if one decides to go against them. Romance is also a thing in Greedfall.
#3 Gameplay
Greedfall features a fast and fluid combat system. The players will be given the freedom to choose their starting class which ranges from - Warrior (melee build which specializes in sword combat), Mage (specializes in various kinds of spells and magic which depletes mana) and Technical (more like a rogue build which focuses on laying traps and using potions to gain a tactical advantage over their enemies.)
There is no level cap in Greedfall so players can mix and match various classes and abilities as they progress further in the game. According to the devs, players will have finished most of the activities the game has to offer by the time they reach level 40-50, which is a decent number.
Players will find a lot of points of interest while exploring the magical island of Teer Fradee. Question marks like the ones found in the games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can be found scattered throughout the game map which may lead to a battle or maybe the location of a lost treasure waiting to be found.
Speaking of battles, Greedfall will also feature a number of boss battles, some during the main quests and some you can randomly stumble upon while exploring the game's flora. All the mythical creatures are intricately designed to look different and provide a unique combat encounter.
Greedfall also features a tactical pause system like the ones found in Dragon Age games, where players can pause to really take in the view of the battlefield and strategize accordingly. This feature wasn't necessarily needed in a game that features real-time combat but serves as a fun addition as it really deepens the combat.
This is everything you need to know about Greedfall which launches September 10 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
