The First Descendant features various unique characters to pick and customize, including aspects like costumes and colors. The latter can be a bit tricky to perform given that the title does not explicitly provide instructions to follow. But gamers are an eclectic bunch. Many would love to add a touch of personalization to their hero and stand out from dozens of other players in the lobby.
Thankfully the process is relatively simple. At the same time, there is a catch that may force you to reconsider the idea. The following dives into everything you need to know about changing character skin colors in The First Descendant.

To change skins, players must first navigate to the Inventory (by pressing the I key on PC or the Options button on PlayStation and Xbox). Then tap on Customize, and then finally select the Descendant Skin. Here, you will notice various slots for cosmetic pieces, such as Head or Body Skin. To change color, you need to highlight the cosmetic part and then select Change Color (via the F key on PC, L2 on PlayStation, and LT on Xbox).
You will need a resource called Paint to dye the skins and these are crafted at the Spectrum Chart Combiner in the Albion hub area using three ingredients: Atom Topcoat, Oort Stone, and Spectrometer. All are purchasable using the premium currency called Caliber. Paint is also a one-time consumable so if you use the red dye on a skin, you must craft another to use for another part.
Making matters worse, the Paint output from the Spectrum Chart Combiner is limited. Unfortunately, most players will likely run into a problem. There are no customization options available for the default look of each hero (such as Ajax's armor) as they do not count as skins. In other words, color options are only available for premium cosmetics that are available for purchase.
A large pool of players will likely be riding the free wave, so they cannot utilize the color customization. The only way to do so is by purchasing Caliber credits. This is presumably intended to push players into purchasing skins using real money. But that is a drawback if you're trying to heavily customize your hero. Unfortunately, even basic cosmetics cannot be modified.
The game is available as a free-to-play experience on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
