Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, much like the base game, features some really complex optional questlines, that span the entirety of the game's runtime. One such questline is that of Count Ymir's, who resides in the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. While Ymir's quest can be started fairly early, it only reaches its conclusion once you're near the DLC's end-game.

The quest initially starts as something that seems not so harmful, requiring you to ring a couple of bells (Dark Souls reference, perhaps). However, as you progress through the questline, you'll eventually realize that the implications of the tasks assigned to the Tarnished by Ymir, have massive lore implications.

How to start Count Ymir's questline in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree?

To start Count Ymir's questline, you first need to progress through Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, enough to reach the Scadu Altus, and subsequently, the Moorth Ruins. Reaching Scadu Altus requires you to defeat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight, the boss of Castle Ensis. Once you make your way to Sacdu Altus, go to the eastern end of the region to reach Moorth Ruins.

From the Moorth Ruins, proceed towards the northeast until you reach a small chasm among the rubble of a ruined cathedral. Descend the chasm carefully and at the end of it, you will find a ladder that takes you to Bonny Village. From Bonny Village, head north until you reach the Church District Crossroads.

From the crossroads, keep to the path on the left and you will reach the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. Head inside to activate a Site of Grace and also talk to Count Ymir. Interacting with Ymir for the first time and completing his dialogue will start the questline.

Steps to complete Count Ymir's questline in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Count Ymir's questline is divided into three parts, each requiring you to blow a horn that awakens the Mother of Fingers. After talking to Ymir for the first time, he will give you the map of the first horn's location. This is fairly easy to find as it's hidden close to the Cerulean Coast. You just need to take the left path, adjacent to the first huge stone coffin in the area.

This will take you to the Finger Ruins of Rhia, where you will need to make your way to the center to find the horn. After interacting with the first horn, return to Ymir. Talking to Ymir again will give you the map for the second horn, which admittedly, is a bit trickier to find since it's hidden in the Hinterland, past the Shaman Village.

Once you interact with the second horn, return to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr and talk to Ymir again. Lastly, you will receive the map of the third and final horn. To find this horn, you won't have to venture far. Rest at the cathedral's Site of Grace, head back to where Ymir was seated, and interact with the throne.

Doing so will reveal a hidden path underneath the cathedral, which leads you to the third horn. Descend to the underground area and interact with the horn. However, unlike the other two horns, this will transport you to a different plane, one where Metyr, Mother of Fingers is resting.

Your next objective is to fight Metyr, Mother of Fingers, and head back to Ymir. After defeating Metyr, when you head back to the cathedral's entrance, you will be attacked by Ymir's loyal knight - Jolan. After defeating the invader, head back to Ymir's throne and interact with it. This will trigger Ymir's reappearance, albeit as the new Mother of Fingers.

Defeat Count Ymir, Mother of Fingers to conclude Count Ymir's questline and also get rewarded with one of the most powerful Sorcery Staffs in Elden Ring - the Maternal Staff.
