What is Squalor in Frostpunk 2?
Squalor is one of the five City problems that players face when maintaining or expanding their City and is related to the pollution and runoff created by Generators and certain Buildings. It is also created by the scarcity of necessary Materials.
Squalor is mostly increased due to noisy Generators but it can also be impacted by some of the following Buildings:
- Calibrated Goods Factory
- Deep Melting Drill
- Mechanical Factory
- Advanced Mechanised Sawmill
Make sure you keep your Squalor levels low as it can greatly contribute to worsening the living conditions of your City, ultimately leading to its downfall and your exile unto death (not recommended).

How to prevent Squalor in Frostpunk 2
You can prevent Squalor in Frostpunk 2 by addressing specific issues and strategically placing structures and Buildings to make sure the City is not affected. Here are some of the ways in which you can address the issue of Squalor in Frostpunk 2:
Build Filtration Towers & Waste Management Facilities
One of the best ways to handle Squalor in the game is to build a Moss Filtration Tower. Head over to the Resources section of the Idea Tree and select the Filtration tower to research it.
Once the research is complete, you should expand a Housing District and then navigate to the Housing tab in the Buildings menu, select the Moss Filtration Tower, and immediately place it in the District. If your Squalor is still growing, expand another Housing District to place an additional Moss Filtration Tower.
Additionally, you can build Waste Management Facilities to combat the rising Squalor in your City. Head to the Resources section of the Idea Tree and research the Waste Management Facilities. Once it is researched, place the Waste Management Facilities in an Industrial District to reduce the Squalor in your City.

- Improve Production Efficiency and increase the volume of Materials created.
- Research Maintenance Hubs from Hubs in the Idea Tree and place them in proximity to Districts to create a smoother distribution network.
- Build new Extraction Districts on Material-generating tiles.
- Spend your research on Buildings that improve the efficiency of your Extraction Districts like Foundries and Mills. However, make sure to place these far away so as not to cause pollution and increase Squalor.

Simply head to the District housing the Building and after selecting it, interact with the power icon next to the Building to shut it down. Make sure to be aware of which Buildings you are shutting down as the wrong one could lead to Material Scarcity and ultimately increase Squalor.
Make sure to keep an eye on the Squalor bar and if you follow all the methods mentioned above, your Squalor will hopefully trend towards "Diminishing" and ultimately to "Absent"
