How to defeat Captain Klinger in Metaphor ReFantazio

Captain Klinger is one of the first Metaphor ReFantazio bosses, and he does a lot to set the scene of the game. Like Persona 5, this Atlus RPG is filled with people who abuse their station and power to ensure they stay successful and powerful. Captain Klinger is no different. When you stumble upon him, you learn that he’s responsible for massacres and murders, just to keep Prince Louis in power.

Captain Klinger works for Prince Louis, a contender for the throne in Metaphor ReFantazio and a man rotten to the core. If you’re having trouble defeating this military man and his troop, read on to learn how to put them in the ground.

Tips to defeat Captain Klinger in Metaphor ReFantazio

Captain Klinger doesn’t come alone in Metaphor ReFantazio, he has a pair of Mages to help buff him up. They should be your first target; he won’t summon more of them. Treat him like the first Seymour battle in Final Fantasy X and defeat his allies first. Thankfully, your protagonist isn’t alone. You have Strohl and the newly powered-up Grius on your side.

In my case, I had Protagonist (Seeker), Strohl (Warrior), and Strohl (No Archtype). In this instance, you don’t control Grius, he’ll just attack as he sees fit. With a strong Diagonal Slash from Strohl and Cyc Spell from the Hero, you can take one of the Mages out immediately.

The other one will still get a turn since Grius cannot one-shot him. Captain Klinger will likely follow up with Mage Fire in this Metaphor ReFantazio boss fight. The Mage Guard will probably boost Klinger’s defense stat, but it’s nothing to worry about. Just slaughter the next guard and begin to focus on Captain Klinger.

While Klinger’s not weak to any of the attacks you have access to right now, he's still relatively easy to put away. His Mage Fire can hit Strohl (who resists it), and it does very little outside of that. If Diagonal Slash crits, you’ll get an extra hit, since hitting enemies’ weakness/crit strikes only takes half of an attack pip.

However, if he hits the Hero with a Fire attack, he is weak to it, and this will grant Captain Klinger another strike in Metaphor ReFantazio. When he’s down to 10%-15% HP, he’ll yell “Die, die, die!” and use Mage Flames, which is an AOE strike.

This guarantees him an extra hit, due to the weakness of the Hero. One or two more hits and he’ll drop, clearing the way for you to leave the Nord Mines. Success grants 150 EXP, 150 A-EXP, 300 MAG, 600 Money, and a Captain’s Uniform.
