The Varmareno Coliseum in Metaphor ReFantazio is a special dungeon you unlock after completing the main quests in Martira. In it, you will face hordes of enemies, and each wave will be tougher to beat than the last. Every time you survive a wave, you reach the next rank. You must keep beating foes until you fight the final boss.

While the game doesn’t offer hints regarding the recommended level for the Coliseum, we tackled it only after we reached level 55. You should engage in Ranked battles once you get to level 55-60 and have unlocked the Prince Archetype for the protagonist.

After you have cleared the Ranked battles, you will unlock Gauntlet battles, which are much more difficult than the former. You can tackle the Gauntlet battles when you reach level 70 or higher during the end game.

With that in mind, here is how you can defeat each enemy in the Varmareno Coliseum's Ranked battles in Metaphor ReFantazio.

Certification Battle: Crag Manjula

In the Certification Battle, you will need to defeat the Crag Manjula in precisely three turns.

Strategy

Weaknesses: The Crag Manjula is weak to strike attacks. However, it’s resistant to pierce and slash damage. Fire attacks are also ineffective against it.

Recommended classes

  • Wizard class: Wizards perform well here. Their basic attacks chip away at Crag Manjula, while the Blizza can do substantial damage.
  • Pugilist and Brawler classes: These classes excel with their strike-focused skills and use Perfect Punch to maximize strike-damage output.

Employ four Brawlers and focus on continuously using Perfect Punch to inflict consistent strike damage. Offset the HP cost of Perfect Punch with a multi-healing spell through Skill Inheritance on one of your members.

Rewards

  • Money: 25,000
  • Rank: Bronze III

Bronze Rank III: Goborn King

This fight against the Goborn King can be much easier with proper class synergy. This foe brings along Goborn minions, which can be quickly killed if you use the right AoE attacks.

Strategy

Class combinations

  • Swordmaster: Start with the Vorpal Blade synthesis skill to attack all Goborns simultaneously.
  • Faker: Use the Dekaja ability to negate the foe's buffs. This ability is particularly useful, as the Goborn King frequently casts Unwavering Blade to increase his agility.

With these skills, focus on wiping out the minions, leaving only the Goborn King. The King will recast Unwavering Blade each turn, but you can continually negate this buff with Dekaja.

Rewards

  • Items: Man O'War gloves
  • Rank: Bronze Rank II
  • Courage

Bronze Rank II: Gangaflos and Serpetias

This fight occurs in the overworld.

Strategy

Recommended classes

  • Mage/Wizard: These classes have a wide hitbox for their basic attacks, so they attack multiple enemies at once.
  • Seeker: The Chase Support passive allows your party members to join in and attack more often.

With this strategy, you can efficiently take down the enemies as they appear around the Coliseum arena.

Rewards

  • Items: 10 Blessed Waters, 5 Graced Waters, 2 Heavenly Waters

Bronze Rank I: Vesp and Nocross

This battle is a solo fight where you face both the Vesp and Nocross without synthesis attacks.

Strategy

  • Status Effect Management: Nocross can inflict Forget, while Vesp causes Hex and Poison. These status ailments stack, so consider wearing accessories that counteract them.
  • Forget-Me-Nots Accessory: If available, equip this to prevent Forget.
  • Venomward Charm: If you’re prioritizing defense against Vesp, this charm counters Hex and Poison.

Class and skill recommendations

  1. Seeker class: Utilize Cyclo to quickly eliminate Nocross.
  2. Gunner class: Use Poison Shot or Hex Shot for ranged attacks on Vesp.
  3. Magic Knight: If better options aren't available, Heavy Rush will work well here, though using a ranged skill and moving to the back row is ideal.

Focus on defeating one enemy first. Start with the foe whose weaknesses align with your equipped accessory since this will reduce incoming damage and help stabilize the fight.

Rewards

  • Items: Fortune’s Grasp accessory, Rainbow Bathblossom
  • Rank: Silver Rank III
  • Courage

In this battle, you fight against multiple Homo Tentai, each with specific elemental weaknesses and resistances.

Strategy

Class setup

  • Swordmaster with Vorpal Blade synthesis to lower enemy attacks.
  • Two Brawlers: You need one with fire skills and another with ice. The Azure Homo Tenta is weak to fire, while the Ochre Homo Tenta is weak to ice.
  • Faker/Gunner: Equip Marakukaja for defense boosts.

The strategy involves alternately using fire and ice attacks on Azure and Ochre Homo Tentai, casting Marakukaja with your Faker/Gunner, and then using Vorpal Blade to weaken the enemies’ offense.

Rewards

  • Items: Miracle Igniter
  • Rank: Silver Rank II
  • Courage

Silver Rank I: Coliseum Mage and Coliseum Fighter

This battle requires two Brawlers, and while the Mage is weak to strike attacks, it can deal good damage.

Strategy

  • First, focus on the Fighter. Although resistant to strike attacks, this foe is weak to light magic. Equip Hamaon or another light spell to quickly eliminate him in around four hits.
  • Mage: After taking out the Fighter, turn your attention to the other opponent, who won’t be able to Daze your party.

The General’s Ice Dodge passive can help evade the Mage’s attacks, and the Almighty Megido skill is beneficial for steady damage output. Additionally, Faker’s Dekaja can negate the Mage’s hit/evasion buffs.

Rewards

  • Items: Full Moon Medal accessory, Chain of Bonds accessory
  • Rank: Gold Rank III
  • Courage

Gold Rank III: Lina

This is another solo fight against your rival Lina. Ice attacks will help you against this enemy, but the best way to approach this battle is with the Prince Archetype.

Strategy

  • Recommended Archetype: Prince (available after the ninth month) - Start in the back row and use Hero’s Cry for four extra turns, following up with Radiance until Lina’s HP is depleted.

If you're attempting to beat this Lina before the ninth month, consider the Faker Archetype and Roguery skill to gain extra turns and unleash ice skills.

Rewards

  • Items: Jade Jian weapon
  • Rank: Gold Rank II
  • Courage

Gold Rank I: "Fearful Monster" (Homo Luano)

The Homo Luano is a tank, with resistance to all damage types and a deadly two-turn kill countdown.

Strategy

Class skills

  • Berserker’s Wanton Destruction and General’s Frigid Fortress Tactics will force strike weakness on Homo Luano and apply ice weaknesses to it, respectively.
  • Once the weaknesses are applied, spam these skills for continuous damage until this foe is defeated.

Rewards

  • Items: Gambler's Manual accessory, Overlord’s Sash accessory
  • Quest: Become Champion of the Coliseum

Champion of the Coliseum Battle: Guptauron

The fight against Guptauron is considered one of the hardest battles in the Coliseum, both due to the boss’ exceptionally high defenses and the two-turn time limit. To win, you’ll need to focus on maximizing your damage per turn using debuffs and by taking advantage of every turn.

Strategy

Class and skills

  • Prince Archetype: Start the fight with Hero’s Cry to gain four extra turns.
  • Seeker or Commander Class: Follow up with Vidyartha to debuff the Guptauron’s defenses.
  • Spam Radiance: After using Vidyartha, use Radiance continuously since it deals consistent, high damage that pierces the Guptauron’s defenses.

If you don’t have the Prince Archetype unlocked, consider equipping as many high-damage skills as possible. Focus on dealing light elemental attacks and use every damage-boosting accessory you have.

Rewards

  • Items: Heaven’s Oath accessory, Lionheart Emblem
  • Coliseum Champion title
  • Special Courage Boost: Allows a +20 to Courage, pushing followers closer to a higher follower rank.

Successfully beating all these enemies will mark completition of Varmareno Coliseum's Ranked battles. in Metaphor ReFantazio.
