How to defeat Undead Grius in Metaphor ReFantazio

Metaphor ReFantazio features some heartbreaking moments, including the fate of Grius. Watching Grius be murdered by powerful magic really helps set the tone for the game. The sorrow of his loss deepens when you’re forced to fight him as a zombie. However, this does lead to Hulkenberg joining the party as a Knight, so there’s at least some measure of joy to be found.

Having to fight the Undead Grius is a sad moment in Metaphor ReFantazio, but the veteran soldier needs to be put down. Here’s how we dealt with him in Atlus’ latest JRPG masterpiece.

The battle with Undead Grius is likely where you’ll unlock your first Synthesis Skills in Metaphor ReFantazio. At this point in the game, my party was Healer (Hero), Knight (Hulkenberg), and Warrior (Strohl).

The Healer is arguably the most important class in the game right now. Other than having an AOE heal, the Healer class has Hama, an Almighty-type spell.

Since Undead Grius is, well, undead in Metaphor ReFantazio, this is something he’s weak to. It’ll hit him for about 250-300 damage, chunking his health bar easily.

As far as attacks go, Undead Grius has Phantom Dance, a powerful AOE strike that can easily hit for 50-70 damage. It only takes one pip, so he will likely follow up with a melee strike on someone in your party.

For this reason, make sure to keep your healing items and spells ready to go. Hulkenberg’s Knight’s Proclamation won’t stop the AOE strikes, but it will focus his melee attacks on her, keeping your healer safe.

Just keep hammering him with Diagonal Slash, Hama, and Hulkenberg’s melee attacks to wear him down. At around 50%, he’ll start using Mocking Phantasm, which is another single-target attack. If you have Knight’s Proclamation, it won’t hit Hulkenberg hard, as she resists slash attacks as a Knight.

It’s also worth using the Synthesis Attack with Hulkenberg/Strohl (Jump Thrust). If it crits, it will deal around 450 damage, which will put you on the fast-track to defeating Undead Grius.

Once he’s been defeated, you’ll receive 263 EXP, 158 A-EXP, 1800 MAG, and 2000 Money. There’s still more to do though, so the party needs to get back to work.
