The Tiger Trout in Stardew Valley is a rare hybrid fish of Brown Trout and Brook Trout. The fish is unable to reproduce when placed in a Fish Pond and can only be obtained by fishing in a specific water body at a particular time. This makes it one of the most challenging types of species to obtain in the game.
That said, you need several of these to complete the Aquatic Overpopulation quest as well as Willy’s quest. If you’re struggling to obtain them, this article will guide you through different ways to get Tiger Trout in Stardew Valley.

1) Fishing in the winter and fall seasons

The simplest way to acquire Tiger Trout in Stardew Valley is by fishing in the river that flows between Pelican Town and Cindersap Forst. These fishes only populate the river in winter and fall, where they can be caught between 6 am and 7 pm.
However, simply casting your fishing rod in the river won’t guarantee a Tiger Trout. These fish have one of the most unpredictable movements, making it difficult to keep the bar in green during the mini-game. It is recommended to use an Iridium Rod or Fiberglass Rod to make catching them easier.
2) Purchasing from merchants
Another method to obtain these fish is to regularly visit Krobus’ Shop and Traveling Cart. You can find Krobus’ Shop every Wednesday where he sells one Tiger Trout for 200g. Similarly, the Traveling Cart visits Cindersap Forest every Friday and Sunday and has a random chance to sell Tiger Trouts for 450g to 1000g.
The downside to this method is its randomness and unreliability. The Traveling Cart and Krobus’ Shop's inventory is random, so it might take several visits to get even a single Tiger Trout using this method. Therefore, we recommended combining this method with fishing in the river to maximize your chances of obtaining the fish.
3) Using the Magic Bait item
If you don’t want to be restricted to a specific time or season for hunting Tiger Trouts, you can use the Magic Bait. The bait can be crafted after reaching Fishing Level 7 using a Coral and a Void Essence.
Once crafted, put the bait on your fishing rod and cast the line in the river between Pelican Town and Cindersap Forest. This will allow you to catch Tiger Trouts regardless of the time or season.
Magic Bait is an efficient way to target rare fish like Tiger Trout in Stardew Valley. That said, the ingredients to craft it are only obtainable after you have made significant progress in the story. Thus, the method can be unapproachable for low-level players.
