A horse in Stardew Valley can be obtained once you purchase the Stable from Robin’s Carpenter Shop. Riding the animal increases your movement speed by 30%, and you do not slow down even when moving across crops or sand. For this reason, having a horse makes navigating the large in-game world much more convenient.

You can even increase the sprinting speed of your horse by employing a few extra tricks. This article will walk you through all the methods you can use to increase horse speed in Stardew Valley.


How to boost horse speed in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley lacks any sort of speed upgrades for the horse, so there is no permanent way to upgrade the animal’s base speed. However, there are several methods to boost its speed temporarily.

The simplest way to obtain a small speed boost for your horse is by feeding it a carrot. Doing so will instantly grant a +0.4 speed boost that lasts for the whole day. You can feed your horse anytime to obtain this speed boost, but the effect will end at midnight.

Carrots in Stardew Valley can be obtained by planting carrot seeds during the spring season. You can obtain these seeds by opening treasure chests, digging at seed spots, or using the Seed Maker.


2) Using Horse: The Book

ConcernedApe has introduced Power Books with the 1.6 Stardew Valley update. These books can be purchased from the Bookseller to permanently boost certain skills.

Bookseller visits the Valley twice every month. You can check the date of his arrival by looking for the hot-air balloon mark on the calendar. Purchase Horse: The Book from him for 25,000g to permanently increase your sprinting speed of your horse by +0.5.


3) Drinking coffee

Consuming coffee grants a +1 speed boost to your movement speed for one minute and 23 seconds. This effect can be combined with your horse to obtain a temporary boost to the animal’s speed.

You can purchase coffee from Gus at the Stardrop Saloon or make your own by mixing coffee beans in a keg.

In addition to coffee, there are other speed-boosting foods and drinks that can increase your horse’s sprinting speed. Moreover, the speed boost from coffee/triple shot espresso and food stack up, so you can consume the drink and eat any speed-boosting items to increase your horse’s movement speed massively.

Here is a list of food items that provide speed buffs:

  • Crab Cakes: Crab, Wheat Flour, Egg, Oil.
  • Pepper Poppers: Hot Pepper, Cheese.
  • Super Meal: Bok Choy, Cranberries, Artichoke.
  • Spicy Eel: Eel, Hot Pepper.
  • Magic Rock Candy: Purchase from Desert Trader.

The Statue of Blessing grants a random blessing every day upon interacting with it. These blessings include Blessing of Speed, which increases your movement speed by +0.5 for the whole day. The effects of this buff will also work on your horse, increasing its movement speed till midnight.

You can craft a Statue of Blessing after completing Farming Mastery and collecting the following materials:

  • 999 Stone
  • 999 Sap
  • 999 Fiber
  • 333 Moss
