How to make a Fish Pond in Stardew Valley
The Fish Pond is a type of farming structure that you can purchase from Robin at the Carpenter Shop. A Pond will take two in-game days to construct and require the following materials:
- 200 Stones - Stones can be easily collected from the overworld or by breaking stones with a pickaxe on your farm, Skull Cavern, or the Mines.
- Five Green Algae - Green Algae can be acquired in any season by fishing in fishing spots spread across the map.
- Five Seaweed - Seaweed can also be found by fishing in the ocean or tidal pools during any season.
- 5000 gold
After collecting the aforementioned materials, simply talk to Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop and select the desired place where you wish to construct your pond. Do note that a pond occupies a 5x5 area, so ensure to have the desired area cleaned up before starting construction.
How do Fish Ponds work in Stardew Valley?
Ponds in Stardew Valley can hold any type of fish except the Legendary Fish. Each Fish Pond can hold only one species. So, if you’re planning to breed multiple species, then you will need to construct multiple ponds.
However, you can change the type of fish in an existing pond by selecting the “Empty Pond” option. This will empty your pond for new fish but will destroy any remaining fish, so make sure to collect any Roe or fish in your inventory before selecting this option.
To start your aquaculture journey, simply hold the fish in your hand and right-click on the pond to “throw” the fish into it. You will need at least two fish of the same type to begin breeding.
Once there are two fish of the same species in the pond, they will start reproducing and spawn a new fish every one to five days up to the limit of the pond. This applies to all fishes in the game except Tiger Trout, which do not reproduce and must be obtained via fishing with a magic bait.
Fish Ponds also generate Roe, which can be gifted to villagers, eaten to restore 50 energy and 22 health, or sold to a merchant for a price.
How to upgrade the Fish Pond in Stardew Valley
At the base level, a Fish Pond allows you to place a maximum of three fish at a time. The exceptions to this are Ghostfish, Ice Pip, Lava Eel, Slimejack, Blobfish, Void Salmon, and Woodskip fishes, where only one can be placed in a base-level pond.
After a pond reaches its full capacity, an exclamation mark will appear on top of it. Interacting with said pond will trigger a Fish Quest where you will need to search for specific items to raise its maximum capacity.
