After fighting his way to the city, Kratos confronts Thor and persuades him to be better for the sake of their children. That enrages Odin, who appears and kills Thor, setting up the final battle in which Kratos, Atreus, and Freya team up to defeat Odin in a multi-stage event. This ends the fight, as well as Asgard, as Ragnarok stabs Asgard in the heart with his sword. Kratos, Freya, and Atreus narrowly escape with their lives, and the game begins over when Atreus awakens in Midgard. This is revealed to be Atreus' shrine, built by none other than his mother Faye, and depicts the events of Ragnarok's story as they actually occurred, rather than the previously prophesied versions.

This inspires Atreus, and he informs Kratos that he must complete a job on his own, to which Kratos just supports him. After watching Atreus go, Kratos uncovers a hidden shrine behind Atreus' that depicts his voyage from Sparta to Midgard.
