Following the narrative of the franchise in the correct order might be the only way to decide which side walks the path of truth.

In this article, we will explore how to play the Assassin's Creed games in order. We will divide the mainline titles into different sagas, which can help you understand the series in a better manner.

Here's how to play Assassin's Creed games in order

The Assassin's Creed games stretch over across centuries and continents. If we take both of these into account, the game can be divided into six sagas. We recommend playing the game according to these sagas, and following the order mentioned in each saga for the best Assassin's Creed experience:

  • Altair Saga
  • Ezio Saga
  • Kenway Saga
  • Revolution Saga
  • Ancient Saga
  • Middle Age Saga

1) The Altair Saga

The Altair Saga contains only one game:

  • Assassin's Creed (2007)

The original game from which it all began, Assassin's Creed (2007) introduced the concept of the Assassins and the Templars. It also explained the ongoing conflict over the Apple of the Eden. Playing this title is an important introductory step for anybody looking to dip their feet in the Assassin world.

2) The Ezio Saga

Popularized as "the Ezio trilogy", these Assassin's Creed games should be played in the following order for the best experience:

  • Assassin’s Creed II (2009)
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (2010)
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations (2011)

The Ezio trilogy, which documents the journey of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, is often considered to be the best of the series. Ezio witnesses his family's tragic downfall and gradually transforms from a rash novice to a wise master assassin.

Spread across Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Constantinople, this saga has players climb iconic landmarks, fight for the Assassin Brotherhood, and uncover the deeper secrets of a millennia-old war between Assassins and Templars.

3) The Kenway Saga

We move on to an interesting saga that begins with pirate antics and ends in the American Revolution. The Assassin's Creed games in this section, and the order in which they should be played, are:

  • Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag (2013)
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue (2014)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (2012)

The Kenway saga takes players on a tour through the 18th century. Although Black Flag was released after AC3, the progenitor of this saga is undoubtedly Edward Kenway, the pirate-Assassin from AC4 Black Flag. Edward's son Haytham Kenway is a Templar Grandmaster who serves as the primary antagonist for AC3, while Haytham's son Connor Kenway is the protagonist in the same title set during the American Revolution.

Rogue is an interesting connecting point between Black Flag and AC3. However, it gained notoriety for exploring the grey area between the Assassin and Templar groups, with the Assassin-turned-Templar protagonist Shay Patric Cormac.

With only two titles in this section, here is the order to play these Assassin's Creed games:

  • Assassin’s Creed Unity (2014)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (2015)

The Revolution Saga starts with AC Unity, which throws you into the heart of the French Revolution. The Assassins find themselves tangled in the idealistic views of the Templar manipulation. You dismantle the Templar ranks as Arno Dorian, in a game that has parkour mechanics and a world design that will mesmerize you.

In contrast, Syndicate takes you to Victorian London amid the Industrial Revolution. Assassin twins Jacob and Evie Frye bring the fight to the Templars in a social, economic, and political battle, where freeing a poverty-stricken London from Templar control is paramount.

5) The Ancient Saga

Taking a giant leap back in time to the origin of the Assassin organization, here is the correct order to play these games:

  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (2017)

Set in a more open-world and RPG format, the Assassin's Creed Ancient saga takes us back to classical Greece during the Peloponnesian War. Here, myth and history collide as we confront a shadowy organization pulling the strings to create conflict in the lands. Our protagonist is a Spartan, a descendant of the legendary King Leonidas I, and we also see other distinct figures like Socrates and Pericles.

In Assassin's Creed Origins, we witness the birth of the Hidden Ones, the forerunners of the Assassin Brotherhood, in Ptolemaic Egypt. You follow Bayek, a Medjay protector on a path of vengeance that sees the birth of the iconic Hidden Blade and the ongoing struggle against the Order of the Ancients (who become the modern-day Templars).

6) The Middle Age Saga

For the final saga, here is the order in which you should play the remaining Assassin's Creed games:

  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage (2023)
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (2020)

Delving into the medieval period, this Assassin's Creed saga takes you from the sands of Arabia to the frigid plains of Scandinavia. In Mirage, you are thrown into the shoes of Basim, a young Assassin on a mission to uncover the mysteries of the Hidden Ones in the 9th century Baghdad.

Basim makes a return in Valhalla as a mentor for Eivor. You shadow the journey of the Viking Eivor during England's Dark Ages through a narrative driven by the Nordic stories. Valhalla featured the biggest world in Assassin's Creed history, and it is the longest game with brutal and grand animations.
