Proficiency is a mastery system in the game to gauge how much time a user has spent playing a character. After finishing a battle, players will see a gauge with seven stars. Clearing a level with a character for the first time awards the level 1 Proficiency star, and the more a character is used, the higher their Proficiency will be over time.
While this does not have any effect on gameplay, players can use it to track which heroes and villains they have spent the most time with, as each character has different move sets, transformations, and more. Unfortunately, maxing out Proficiency doesn't net players reward either, so it is just a means to track the frequency of a character's usage.

That said, players can get certain rewards depending on the Proficiency level by looking at the Challenges tab. Longtime Budokai Tenkaichi fans and enthusiasts who wish to get proficient with as many of their favorites as possible may find the task a little tedious due to the number of characters in the game. However, there are ways to level up multiple Proficiencies at once, for a maximum of five characters simultaneously.
The easiest way to achieve this is by engaging in Custom Battles with a team of five characters against the AI or playing against friends in Online or Local Battles. Even if players do not use a character in the fight, as long as they are on the team they will get the Proficiency points.
