As it is in all fighting games, you need to timely dodge the attacks to preserve your energy and then look out for the best chance to strike. Just before the opponent throws an attack, make sure to timely press R1/RB to dodge. To make things even more interesting, you can try the step-in sway by pressing X/A followed by R1/RB. However, just like normal dodging, your character might suffer from a dreadful attack if you don't do this at the right moment.
If you are new to this title or fighting games in general, blocking alone can prove helpful. However, eventually, your opponent might understand your defensive tactics and can use Guard Break to get the better of you.
Deflecting light beams
Deflecting light beams in the game takes up two bars from your Ki gauge in the game. So, make sure you have enough Ki and your timing is perfect to not let your Ki go to waste. To do so, you need to press Triangle+ Circle/Y+B. The perfect time to do so is when the opponent is about to release their attack.
Sonic Sway tutorial
Sonic Sway is the hardest defence tactic to learn in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. To do this, you need to hold Circle/B. When an opponent rushes towards you with the intention of a brutal attack, hold Circle/B at the last moment to get an opportunity to counterattack. You can also do so against Ki Blasts, but this will take up two bars from your Ki meter.
