Stardew Valley offers players the unique mechanics of having children, being able to marry an NPC of their choosing, and setting up a whole life with them. Another unique feature of the game is the ability to produce offspring, who can be interacted with and hearts leveled up as well.
Players can have up to two children, with one being male and one being female. The process is based on chance, and there are no other ways to have children in the game. Below are the steps to have kids in Stardew Valley.
How to have a chance of having kids in Stardew Valley
The most important prerequisite to having kids is being married to another character. We've covered a detailed guide on the process, but the basic requirements are to have been married for at least seven days and to have a relationship of at least 10 hearts with the spouse.

The heart level can be maintained or improved by interacting with the spouse or giving them gifts. Next up, a nursery must be built within the Farmhouse. Within the nursery, a crib must be placed and kept.
If all these prerequisites are met, there is an approximately 5% chance of the spouse asking the player if they would want kids, with the player being provided with an option to accept or decline this offer. Once accepted, a child will appear in the crib after 14 days, with the gender of the child being randomly chosen by the game.
For same-gender couples, the same process has to be followed, but instead of being born, the child will be adopted after 14 days. The only additional change here is that the spouse will inform the player that the adoption process has been initiated, and 14 days later the child will appear in the crib.
The child will go through four stages of life:
- Stage 1: The child will sleep in the crib and cannot be interacted with.
- Stage 2: The child stands up in the crib and the player can interact with them and toss them in the air.
- Stage 3: The child will start crawling around the house.
- Stage 4: The child is now a toddler and can be interacted with. The child will run around the house and will stay at this stage indefinitely.
Once a child has reached the final stage, only then can a second kid be had. The same prerequisites are in place, with the only change being that the second child's gender is the opposite of the first child.
