It is through the use of Factions in XDefiant, that the title establishes a connection with other iconic Ubisoft franchises. There are five Factions in the title, each from a different game universe and they all bring unique abilities to the table.
Here is a list of all Factions alongside the games they represent:
- Libertad - Far Cry 6
- Phantoms - Ghost Recon
- Echelon - Splinter Cell
- Cleaners - The Division
- DedSec - Watch Dogs 2
The Libertad is the group of freedom fighters from Far Cry 6 and their role in the title is that of a medic. Similarly, the Echelons are from Splinter Cell and are the lone wolves that use stealth and the element of surprise to take down their enemies. The Phantoms are the future soldiers from the Ghost Recon franchise who bring future warfare technology to aid them on the battlefield.
The DedSec are from Watch Dogs 2 and use technology as well, but they prefer to be behind the scenes and assist their teammates. In the same way, Cleaners are from The Division and are the ones who usually fight on the frontlines burning down anything that comes their way.
So how does it all add up in XDefiant? All these Factions or roles, boast skills and abilities from the franchise they are adopted from, and as a result, they bring the essence of those games to the arena shooter.
For instance, let us take the example of the Echelons from the Splinter Cell series. These are "Super Spies" who rely on stealth to take down enemies by surprise. In the original franchise, the player's role has always been to use stealth to infiltrate enemy locations and eliminate them before they even know what hit them. This essence of gameplay has been introduced to the arena shooter through the Faction Echelon.
Similarly, let's take the example of the Faction Libertad. In Far Cry 6, the Libertad is a revolutionary group fighting against the regime of Antón Castillo. In the game, they gain access to the powerful healing capabilities of the Biovida company which produces Viviro, a drug native to Yara that can cure even deadly diseases like cancer.
Now this skillset is brought to the arena shooter from the fictional world of Far Cry 6, making Libertad the medics of the game. But being the rebels they are, do not underestimate their ability to engage in gunfights.
So as seen from the above examples, the arena shooter brings the narrative and the abilities for different roles through the Factions, which are inspired by some of the most iconic Ubisoft franchises.
This is how XDefiant establishes a successful connection with other iconic Ubisoft games.
