Black Myth Wukong isn't a boss rush title, far from it. It is a robust action role-playing game, with plenty of exploration sprinkled in between high-octane boss fights. Ever since it was revealed to the masses, many speculated that the RPG would be a "boss rush" game with very limited exploration, akin to something like the Ninja Gaiden series.

This was somewhat cemented by the title's marketing and trailers, which predominantly featured boss fights and a handful of enemy encounters. However, if you've been holding off on giving it a try due to its rumored linear and "boss rush-esque" structure, there's honestly nothing to worry about.

Here's everything you need to know about Black Myth Wukong's progression system and levels, i.e., chapters.

What is Black Myth Wukong?

At its core, Black Myth Wukong is an action role-playing game, with more focus on "action" rather than "role-playing" aspects. Just like God of War (2018) and Ragnarok, the title is story-driven, complete with cinematic cutscenes and some heartfelt character moments.

As for the gameplay, it's basically focused on a martial arts-inspired combat system, with very mild RPG elements. Its role-playing systems are strictly limited to weapon and armor perks only. Everything else, from your Skills, Spells, and even the Transformations, are all driven by a rather linear progression system.

That said, the game isn't all linear. Every new chapter offers its own sandbox, with multiple NPC quests, hidden loot, and secrets for you to uncover.

For example, in Chapter 2, there's an entirely separate area, with one of the most cinematic boss fights hidden behind a rather obscure side quest, which most players will miss out on. Similar secrets can be found in almost every other chapter. While the main story progression is fairly linear, the chapters (levels) aren't.

Do boss fights constitute the bulk of the content Black Myth Wukong has to offer?

Technically, yes, boss fights constitute the majority of the content in Black Myth Wukong. However, it's not simply a "boss rush" game. In fact, there's ample opportunity in every chapter to go off the beaten path separate from the main story, explore, and discover some hidden secret, which, more often than not, will not end up in a boss fight at all.

While boss fights are the main draw here, there's also plenty of exploration and questing to be done in the game (Image via GameScience)

The title certainly has plenty of boss fights, but just like in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, that's not the only content it has to offer to its players.
