Fans of the genre can rejoice, as Black Myth Wukong is a souls-like game on all fronts. The third-person action hack & slash gameplay will see players step into the shoes of the Sun Wukong the Monkey King, also dubbed the Destined One. Setting out on a perilous adventure, Wukong will fight powerful foes and bosses using his iconic staff.
Many souls-like elements are accounted for, including stamina management, focus on defensive maneuvers like dodging and parrying, learning telegraphed enemy attack patterns, and respawning foes. Players will also have access to different spells and abilities, allowing them to adapt to various scenarios; this is handy as the game boasts larger-than-life bosses that will punish careless players.
The same goes for mob enemies too, as players must be patient lest they get caught in an unsuspected attack or move they did not see coming. To aid this, players have access to different gear, equipment, weapons, and even transformations, the latter being one of the many lore-accurate inclusions from the canon Journey to the West novels.
Checkpoints will be a safe haven while progressing through the narrative and its levels. However, respawning foes will ensure players are on their toes at every turn as they explore the different sandbox areas in search of new encounters and treasures. All in all, it is no doubt a punishing game that caters to the masochistic souls-like crowd.
Black Myth Wukong will be released on August 20, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Check out similar articles:
