Many members of the CS2 community believe that Valve has been sidelining the game for quite a while now. It has come to the attention of all the fans that the developer has excluded their biggest multiplayer game from holiday updates. Counter-Strike 2 has not received any festival-themed cosmetic items and environment changes in 2024. This omission has led to growing speculation about Valve's commitment to the title and its future.

Unfortunately yes, it looks like CS2 is being sidelined, but there could be various reasons for this that we can speculate. This article will explore the possible reasons why CS2 did not receive a holiday update and what the future of the game could be like.

Is CS2 being overlooked by Valve?

As the Reddit post by u/CaraX9 shows, DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2, and even Valve's unreleased MOBA shooter Deadlock received a holiday update. However, there has been no change in CS2 at all. In the past years we've gotten some of the following minor yet interesting changes in Counter-Strike 2 and CS:GO during Christmas:

  • Chickens got Christmas hats.
  • Small Christmas decorations on maps.
  • Ability to throw snowballs at each other.

Considering the direction Counter-Strike 2 is heading, we could only hope that it does not end up following the path of Team Fortress 2, which was once, one of the biggest hero shooters in the world.

While there is no reasoning provided by Valve regarding the lack of updates in this particular game, there could be various factors:

  • Development priorities: Valve may be putting more resources into addressing more critical issues of the game such as bug fixing and a stronger ant-cheat which has been probably the biggest complaint of the community for many years.
  • Strategy: Hopefully, Valve decided to skip the holiday update for CS2 to bring a bigger content update in 2025. That could be a new operation, a new collection of skins, or even new rare items like knives and gloves.
  • Resource allocation: As Deadlock is still under development and getting major updates weekly, there are chances that most of the resources have been allocated there temporarily so that the launch has no issues.

If you have been a long-time fan of Valve, you might be aware of the fact that they have a habit of shifting focus between projects. This often leads to specific games getting less attention for months. Do note that the abovementioned points are pure speculation, and players are asked to await any official confirmation regarding any of them.
