Lightfall, Destiny 2's seventh expansion, was announced on August 23, 2022, and was released in February 2023, with many fans eager after the success of Destiny 2's Witch Queen expansion. That was especially true given that the Witch Queen expansion was undoubtedly the game's high point, but its conclusion left gamers with many unanswered issues.
The Lightfall Expansion added a new story campaign, a new destination, and a new power for players to use against perhaps Destiny 2's most formidable villain.
Is Destiny 2 Lightfall a DLC?
Yes, Destiny 2 Lightfall is a Destiny 2 DLC/expansion and the game's seventh major expansion. While the expansion was originally planned to conclude the current Destiny "Light and Darkness" narrative, it will now lead into Destiny 2: The Final Shape, another expansion unveiled by Bungie that is expected to conclude everything.
Taking up where The Witch Queen DLC and its seasons left off, Lightfall will serve as the penultimate chapter and will include a new campaign, location, Darkness subclass, raid, and much, much more, making it unquestionably one of the most significant Destiny 2 expansions ever.
What is the story of Destiny 2 Lightfall?
The Destiny 2 Lightfall expansion will take place on Neptune in the enigmatic, technologically advanced metropolis of Neomuna, and will revolve around Emperor Calus. Calus, now a Witness Disciple, invades Neomuna with the Witness, the Black Fleet, and their army of Shadow Legion Cabal and Pyramid Tormentors en route to the Traveler in the Last City.
The Guardian will encounter the Cloud Striders, Neomuna's alternate progenitors of humanity who will assist the Guardian in discovering the power of Strand, a new Darkness-based subclass centered on psychic energy and mobility.
What other expansions have been released for Destiny 2?
Destiny 2, like the original, has a major expansion published practically every year. Initially, a major expansion was released each fall, but this was switched to the start of the calendar year in 2022. These massive expansions often have a significant impact on the game, as opposed to modest content drops, such as the two tiny expansions of Year 1 and the seasonal content added in Year 2.
Due to the delay of The Witch Queen, which was initially scheduled for November 2021, 2021 was the only year without a significant expansion release. Thus, there have been seven expansions released for Destiny 2, including two small ones in Year 1 after the game's release.
Year 1 (2017-18): Curse of Osiris and Warmind
Year 2 (2018): Forsaken
Year 3 (2019): Shadowkeep
Year 4 (2020): Beyond Light
Year 5 (2022): The Witch Queen
Year 6 (2023): Lightfall
