Despite the older games in the series being only related to one another by a few cameos and references, Dragon Age The Veilguard is shaping to be a direct sequel to 2014's Inquisition. The upcoming RPG from BioWare takes place roughly 10 years after the events of the third game, especially after the ending of the Trespasser DLC of DA Inquisition.
However, you will not play as The Inquisitor from the third game, instead, taking on the role of Rook, a recruit in the Veilguard faction who must stop the Dreadwolf, Solas's plans at all costs. But do not worry as Dragon Age 4 won't restrict you to that faction only as you will be able to select one for your backstory.
Let's take a look at all the connecting points between Dragon Age The Veilguard and Inquisition that we currently know about from various promotional materials that BioWare has put out.

Why Dragon Age The Veilguard can be considered a sequel to DA Inquisition
Fen'Harel the Dreadwolf
Dragon Age Inquisition's Trespasser DLC sheds light on the intentions of one of the party members, the elven mage, Solas. It is revealed that he has taken on the mantle of the god Fen'Harel, also known as He Who Hunts Alone, and seeks to restore Elves to the top of the food chain in Thedas by tearing down the Veil.
Dragon Age The Veilguard's gameplay trailer showcased Solas's madness finally coming into play as, despite Rook's intervention, he somewhat succeeds in tearing down the Veil, allowing creatures from the realm of Fade to invade Thedas. The game's story will solely focus on Rook's adventure to stop Solas and restore peace to the continent.
10 years apart
The events of Dragon Age The Veilguard will take place 10 years after the ending of the Inquisition. As discussed in the earlier segment, your journey will focus on stopping the eldritch gods from the Fade who have now invaded Thedas.
The Inquisitor and other characters
Your playable character from the Inquisition, The Inquisitor is also set to return in DA The Veilguard. Besides them, many recurring faces like Varric, Lace Harding, and the mage Solas will also see a return in various roles.
It is unclear at the moment what roles the Inquisitor will play in Rook's journey, but it can be assumed that are likely to be a mentor figure to our protagonist, assisting in their mission to take down The Dreadwolf and restore the Veil.
Dragon Age The Veilguard's plot will continue from Inquisition's Trespasser DLC and will put you on a journey to save the world.
