Many players are naturally curious about whether Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree will be playable on the PS4. Owners of the previous-generations consoles like PS4 and Xbox One are concerned, and this curiosity is natural considering there have recently been a few DLCs for AAA games that were released exclusively for current-generation systems.
Elden Ring's upcoming highly anticipated expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, is just a few days away from its official release date. Being in active development for more than two years, Shadow of the Erdtree, in FromSoftware's own words, is the biggest and most expansive DLC content the studio has ever worked on, far surpassing their previous "Soulsborne" expansions.
Thankfully, much like the base game, Elden Ring's upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is coming to PS4 as well as Xbox One systems, albeit with the obvious set of visual and performance cutbacks.

Can you play Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree on PS4?
Unlike DLCs such as Horizon Forbidden West's Burning Shores or Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty, Elden Ring's upcoming expansion is a cross-gen release. Shadow of the Erdtree is arriving on both previous generation (PS4 and Xbox One) as well as current-generation consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S), alongside Windows PC via Steam.
On consoles, the Elden Ring DLC shares the exact same performance and resolution target as the base game, i.e., PS4 and Xbox One being locked to 30fps at 1080p, and PS5 and Series X getting a 4K "Graphics" mode with unlocked framerate and a 1440p "Performance" mode with a 60fps target.
The hype surrounding Shadow of the Erdtree is completely justified considering the widespread praise the base game received upon release. Elden Ring has became one of the most successful titles in FromSoftware's history, far surpassing the likes of Dark Souls, Sekiro, and even Bloodborne. As such, it is understandable that many players will want to play it as soon as possible, even if they don't have access to current-gen consoles.
While the performance and overall experience are admittedly much better on current-generation systems, you aren't missing out on much if you choose to play Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree on PS4 and Xbox One.
Despite the 30fps limit, Elden Ring was an incredibly enjoyable experience on the PS4. And that is coming from someone who has sunk in more than 500 hours in the game and even got the Platinum trophy for it on a PS4. Yes, the jump to PS5 is quite significant, but your experience will still be great if you decide to play the DLC on a PlayStation 4.
