The game was designed to be centered on tract travel pace and fluidity, according to director Takeshi Aramaki. It was described as a narrative-driven adventure by Square Enix. The character lives in an open world game format, where players can travel anywhere at anytime.
There are a variety of magical spells that the player character can use. After each combat encounter, the player is awarded experience points. While applying nail polish unlocks special abilities, Frey's cloak can be upgraded in order to improve her combat efficiency. During the game's fantastical journey, Frey's nail art will play an essential role in maturing your ability and strength. Frey can increase her spellcasting ability by painting her nails with different designs. The Blue Flash Nails in the in-game menu caused Frey's attack spells to charge faster, as shown in a gameplay preview. The Overclock Nails have already been revealed, and they are available with a pre-order of Forspoken. Their effect hasn't been explained yet.
Players can rest at a safe location in order to restore health, or craft new items. Players may encounter a 'breakstorm' while exploring the game world, similar to a horde mode in which waves of demon creatures spawn and attack Frey. The storm culminates with the appearance of a named boss character.
