Ghost of Tsushima was one of the last few PlayStation exclusives to be released before the gaming community transitioned to the next generation, but it was one of the best titles yet. Sucker Punch Productions came out swinging with an exciting new IP set during the darkest chapter in Japanese history.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is renowned for its high-quality first-party franchises, and this samurai adventure is a worthy inclusion. Despite the fierce competition coming later this year, Ghost of Tsushima is one of those games that can be played across multiple playthroughs and on more than one device.

2020 was an exciting year for PlayStation, especially with the imminent release of The Last of Us Part 2 with a new IP in the form of Ghost of Tsushima. Early gameplay previews have caught the eye of the fans with the fluid gameplay, physics, and graphics on the beautiful island of Tsushima torn by war.

Throughout the lengthy story mode, players can unlock new stances to adapt to various enemies, new weapons, and new armor that can be customized with colorful dyes while earning experience points to become better and stronger. Jin has to turn his back on the samurai code to do what is necessary, putting him between a rock and a hard place in the story.

A year after the base game launched on PlayStation 4, the developers released a native PlayStation 5 version through a Director’s Cut featuring an expansion set on Iki Island, and it was later ported to PC. This DLC was a treat for fans who couldn't get enough of the smooth combat and stealth gameplay.

The online multiplayer allowed friends to become legends together

Sucker Punch Productions realized that online multiplayer is an untapped pool of potential for the franchise, leading them to develop Legends. A group of four can join forces to take on mystical foes based on Japanese folklore and tales. There are four classes to select:

  • Samurai - As the Samurai, players can take on hordes of enemies head-on.
  • Assassin - The Assassin can strike enemies from behind and move swiftly on the field.
  • Hunter - Hunters can use ranged attacks to support allies and kill enemies from a distance.
  • Ronin - A Ronin can revive fallen allies and increase the power of their attacks.

Players across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC must work together to take on hordes of enemies by fulfilling their respective roles.

Sony ported the game to PC for a reason

The publishers realized that the game was too good to be tethered to one platform and ultimately decided it was time to end the idea of console exclusivity. The director’s cut of Ghost of Tsushima was ported to PC in May 2024 with a shared trophy list with the PlayStation 5 version to avoid going for the same achievement twice.

PC players can now experience this title on their high-end gaming rigs and the best settings available. With the impressive horsepower of modern gaming PCs, the island of Tsushima looks better than ever on ultrawide monitors.

The Ghost of Yotei is set to be released later this year

After the positive reception of the first game, it would be a mistake for Sucker Punch Productions to not follow up with a sequel. The Ghost of Yōtei was revealed during a State of Play last year and caught the entire community off guard, especially with the reveal of a new heroine.

There are not enough details about the sequel, but it is almost guaranteed that Daisuke Tsuji's Jin Sakai is no longer in the picture since the story takes place 300 years after the original game. It would make sense for players to spend as much time with the Ghost today on the PlayStation 5 and PC before the next entry.

Conclusion

Ghost of Tsushima was a perfect parting gift for PlayStation 4 users in 2020 and deserved the Director's Cut treatment as a formal transition to the next generation. Sucker Punch Productions spoiled the PlayStation and PC communities with this epic samurai tale, and the title deserved all the positive reviews it got.
