Is Ghostrunner 2 available on PS4 and Xbox One?

With each passing day, we are nearing the official launch of Ghostrunner 2. The upcoming first-person action parkour title from 505 Games promises a bigger and more fleshed-out gameplay experience over the 2020 original. New gameplay elements, bigger elements, grander set-pieces, and more showcased by its promotional material certainly suggest a superior experience.

But will last-gen players be able to experience it? 2023 has seen a decline in games developed for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One platforms. With a combined install size of over 120 million users, however, surely there is room for more audiences. Does the sequel take advantage of this by including renditions for PS4 and Xbox One?

Will Ghostrunner 2 be available on PS4 and Xbox One for last-gen users?

Unfortunately, that is not the case. Ghostrunner 2 will only launch on PC, PlayStation 5 (PS5), and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Perhaps expectedly, developer One More Level has opted to drop last-gen support and go all out with current-gen hardware.

Given that the PS4 and Xbox One feature aging, decade-old console tech, modern games avoiding these systems is understandable. Furthermore, the sequel features an ambitious level design thanks to the incorporation of sandbox environments, solidifying its move to current-gen tech.

This isn't an anomaly by any means. For example, Baldur's Gate 3 is another demanding modern game that has skipped last-gen in favor of PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Could Ghostrunner 2 be technically feasible on PS4 and Xbox One?

On paper, sure. Like its predecessor, Ghostrunner 2 is also an Unreal Engine 4 game. Both also share many gameplay similarities as well as aesthetics. The question arises if it would run well, especially in the open-world areas. As we detailed in our review, the game does suffer from shader compilation stutter on PC.

This problem is exacerbated in open areas, especially when blitzing through on the bike. Even if this gets fixed on PC, the dated hardware on last-gen may not cope well. So, while a last-gen version should be feasible, it will undoubtedly see a decline in resolution, graphics quality, and perhaps even frame rate.

Is the original game on PS4 and Xbox One?

Since the first game was launched on last-gen and PC, those unfamiliar with the world of Ghostrunner would do well to check it out on PS4 and Xbox One. The successor continues the original tale, so knowing the background is recommended.

If players are uncertain of the original game's performance on last-gen tech, then worry not, as backward compatibility allows them to play it on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, respectively. This way, one can enjoy it with enhanced visuals and performance.
