Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance brings a lot of new content for fans, such as quality-of-life additions, new characters, and an alternate storyline. But it will also have everything from the original 2021 version of Shin Megami Tensei V - including its protagonist.
The new enhanced version introduced Yoko Hiromine, (Who only appears in the alternate timeline) during the Canon Of Vengeance. Many might confuse her as the new protagonist, but that is not the case. Nahobino remains the protagonist for both timelines. There has been some confusion among fans, especially those who didn’t play the original game, about Nahobino’s gender.
Is the Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance protagonist a girl?
Interestingly, the protagonist does not reveal his gender at any instance of the game. However, multiple pieces of evidence hint at the player's character being a boy. For example, the protagonist wears a male school uniform. We also see other players addressing him as a young man.
The confusion surrounding the protagonist’s gender began after he fused with Aogami, transforming into a mysterious being known as the Nahobino. The protagonist has a slender face with big blue eyes and a small mouth, imparting him with a feminine appearance. The long, glowing blue hair doesn’t help either.
According to the game’s lore, non-human beings like demons and gods or fused beings have ambiguous genders. Several characters in this game series have changed genders or have ended up with both masculine and feminine features.
Is there any female protagonist in the Shin Megami Tensei series?
None of the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games have had a female protagonist. The 1994-released Shin Megami Tensei If… allowed fans to select the protagonist’s gender. But the unnamed girl is the canonical protagonist since she appears in later games as Tamaki Uchida. Moreover, the spin-off game Persona 3 Portable featured a female protagonist, Kotone Shiomi, who was only exclusive to the remake.
