Mafia The Old Country debuts trailer at TGA, confirms protagonist and setting

Mafia The Old Country will take us back to the roots with the Mediterranean vista of early 1900s Sicily. The next torchbearer of the long-running Mafia franchise, it seems like the perfect fit to introduce novelty while running it back with the classic mob-flick action we know and love. At The Game Awards 2024, the game unveiled its first look, giving fans a glimpse into the story's direction.

The trailer presents the initiation rite into the mob family "bound by blood", the pivotal turning point in the career of Enzo Favara, our brand-new protagonist for the next Mafia game.

Mafia The Old Country takes us back to the Sicilian roots of organized crime

Mafia The Old Country is a prequel story set sometime before the very first Mafia game, which received a remaster with Mafia: Definitive Edition in 2020. Rather than the grimy urban Americana, the game will be set in the titular place of genesis: Italy.

Specifically, this game deals with the Cosa Nostra family, a true-to-life historical protection racketeering alliance whose origins date back to the 19th Century. As mentioned before, we will walk in the shoes of Enzo Favara, a new young protagonist. It's uncertain whether Enzo is tied to any future Mafia characters, with some theorizing that he becomes Ennio Salieri after migrating to America.

It's possible that Enzo is a completely fresh character, and there are no obvious ties here. The 'Favara' surname may only be co-incidentally related to Fratellanza di Favara, a real-life nineteenth-century criminal outfit operating out of the Agrigento province in southern Sicily.

There will be, of course, some artistic license taken to curb historical accuracy. Furthermore, the game will be set in San Celeste, a fictional coastal town in Sicily previously featured in the opening chapter of Mafia II.
