Marvel Rivals is the newest entry to the Hero Shooter genre and will compete with titles like Overwatch and Team Fortress 2. The game has significant potential thanks to its massive cast of popular heroes, including legendary characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and the Hulk. However, it faces a potential drawback.
Unfortunately, this issue isn't completely focused on the game but also the genre it’s dipping its feet into. Hero Shooters have reached the point of saturation. With so many games in circulation, doing something new and unique for any new entry, including Marvel Rivals, can be quite challenging.

How can Marvel Rivals remain relevant in the Hero Shooter genre?
Although, as mentioned, Hero Shooters are saturated, innovation is still possible, and Marvel Rivals is well-positioned for it. This game is being developed by gaming giant NetEase and has IP backing from one of the biggest and most profitable superhero brands.
If this title wants to make a name for itself, in my opinion, its best bet is to utilize Marvel IPs as much as possible. A wide array of superheroes can be introduced, not only the popular ones but also some niche characters. The game should also feature an in-depth offline campaign that offers a compelling story.

Beyond introducing new characters, Marvel Rivals can take inspiration from Fortnite and feature various celebrity cameos. Marvel Studios already has some of the biggest and most successful movies featuring Hollywood A-listers like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Samuel L. Jackson. Securing celebrity collaborations may not be a significant challenge.
Celebrity cameos could be added in the form of limited-edition skins, voice lines, and similar features. In terms of gameplay, Marvel Rivals must innovate within the Hero Shooter formula to establish its unique identity. While it's difficult to say much before the release of the Playtest, the balance between shooter characters like Rocket Raccoon and melee characters like the Hulk could offer great gameplay diversity.
Marvel Rivals is still under development, and no official release date has been announced yet. However, according to the official blog post, Marvel Rivals will open its gates to players in North America, Europe, and other regions for an upcoming playtest. The details for the playtest registrations have been shared on its official social media.
