Archetypes are special magic that allows its user to transform into a more powerful form that can use magic. As More explains to you, the Archetype system allows you to call in the powers of the hero kings from the past.
You can unlock Archetypes by getting more followers and bonding with them. Each of the 14 followers in Metaphor ReFantazio brings a new set of abilities and passives and the more you grow closer to them, the more powerful archetypes you can unlock.
How to change Archetype in Metaphor ReFantazio
To change any Archetype, first, make sure that you or your party members have learned more than one of these powers. You can learn them by either visiting the Akademia or once the ability to study archetypes is unlocked in your pause menu.
Once you have studied a particular Archetype, you can change it by going to the equipment section in your pause menu. Each power comes with different weapons, and changing them will change your weapon and stats, like the class system from an RPG.
Any party member can learn most of the Archetypes you discover in the Archetype tree, but to study them, you will need to use MAG or Magla that you obtain from battle. Progressing through a follower's rank also reduces the amount of MAG you will need to study the archetypes of the follower's lineage.
Archetypes can also learn skills that you have obtained early on. This system is called inherit skills and studying abilities will cost you MAG. Initially, you will get only one skill slot, but the more you progress a follower's rank, the more slots will be unlocked for that particular archetype lineage.
What are synthesis skills?
Synthesis skills are a special set of spells that can be performed by having two archetypes that resonate with one another. These special spells can either be used to buff your party or deal damage to enemies. Most Synthesis skills will consume two icons from your turn order, so be careful while using them.
