Mortal Kombat Mobile update 5.4: New characters, Friendships, and other changes explained

The Mortal Kombat Mobile update 5.4 is just released, and it is claimed to be the biggest summer update of the game. The update includes new characters, Friendships, and a new tower, called the Hellspawn Tower. On July 12, 2024, the official Mortal Kombat Mobile account on X announced that the game would be getting a new update on July 17.

There is a lot to unpack here. So, in this article, we will discuss each new major feature that is being brought into the game.

New Characters and Friendships in Mortal Kombat Mobile Update 5.4

1) New Characters

Mortal Kombat Mobile update 5.4 will feature three new characters:

Spawn - Tormented Soul (Diamond)

Spawn was an assassin during his life. After dying during his last mission, he was returned to the Earth as a hellspawn. He has magical abilities and hunts bad guys.

Spawn is a Diamond-tier character who uses the power of necroplasm. This energy will accumulate as the battle goes on. His combat is expected to be based around counter-attacks.

Jax Briggs - On Slaught (Gold)

Jax Briggs is the leader of Outer World Investigation Agency. He is cybernetically enhanced, and known for his calm composure and preceptiveness. On the battlefield, he is a fierce and reliable warrior.

Jax Briggs is a Gold-tier character. He comes armed with his bionic arms. It is expected that he will be able to give himself resistance and attack buffs.

Kenshi - MK1 (Diamond)

Kenshi is a descendant of the former renowned Taira clan. His clan, now called Takahashi, is under the thumb of Yakuza. Kenshi, a blind swordsman, is now searching for a sword called 'Sento', as he believes it has the power to free his clan from Yakuza's control.

Kenshi is a diamond-tier character, and he will be using Sento in Mortal Kombat Mobile. He is expected to give himself speed-boost. Kenshi will also have a Brutality.

2) Friendships

Primary finishers called 'Brutality' were considered too gory by the general public. Hence, non-gory Friendships, often humorous alternate ways to finish off the opponents, were released. Mortal Kombat Mobile update 5.4 adds Friendships for three new characters:

Liu Kang

Equip Liu Kang with Blazing Training and Blazing Girdle to use his new Friendship. The equipment can be unlocked from the new Hellspawn Tower. It will feature him dancing.

Raiden

Equip Raiden with Tempest Bangle and Tempest Lasso to witness his Friendship. The new equipment can also be unlocked from Hellspawn Tower.

Kano

Kano will need Bionic Skeleton and Bionic Eye to perform his Friendship. Both can be unlocked from the Krypt after the Mortal Kombat Mobile update 5.4 update goes live. Kano will be seen cooking hot dogs.

Other Changes in Mortal Kombat Mobile Update 5.4

Display Krypt Run Statistics: Kombatants will be able to share stats of their Krypt run. The performance summary will be available after each run.

Kenshi's Brutality: The new character Kenshi comes with his Brutality. Equip him with Taira Clan's sixth sense and Tiara Clan's suit to use this feature. The items can be unlocked from the Krypt run.

Hellspawn Tower: The new update also features a Hellspawn Tower. Kombatants must conquer it to win new equipment.
