The Final Fantasy expansion officially received a release date during the latest MTG press preview. At the event, fans got a sneak peek at the art of several upcoming cards. We’ve known the expansion was coming for several years as it was revealed alongside an Assassin’s Creed set. While the set was recently launched, all things were quiet concerning the game until MagicCon: Las Vegas.
While there is still a few more months to wait, if this art is anything to go by, it’s going to be worth it. Representing every mainline game in the franchise, there’s going to be something for everyone. Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy come together on June 13, 2025.
Games represented in MTG Final Fantasy expansion
The Final Fantasy MTG expansion isn’t the only major collaboration coming next year. However, it is the one I’m the most excited about. As a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, there are certaiin characters and moments I hope are represented. Some of those have even been confirmed by the art revealed at MagicCon: Las Vegas.

Some fans were understandably nervous that the expansion would primarily be focused around Final Fantasy 7 since it’s one of the more common favorites in the mainstream, and FF7 Remake/Rebirth were both massive successes.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. As a part of the early preview, we got to see quite a few games represented:
- Final Fantasy 6: Kefka
- Final Fantasy 7: Sephiroth
- Final Fantasy 9 (?): Delivery Moogle
- Final Fantasy 10: Tidus and Yuna (Together Forever)
- Final Fantasy 13: Lightning (LIghtning, Army of One)
- Final Fantasy 14: Emet-Selch (Emet-Selch, Unsundered)
Now, there is some confusion about the Moogle in the MTG set because it could be Final Fantasy 14’s delivery moogle or a reference to Mognet in Final Fantasy 9. This artwork is gorgeous and extensive. It’s the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever put together in a single game.
The preview confirmed that Chocobos, Behemoths, and a wide variety of summons and monsters will appear in the set. Noctis, Terra, and Cloud were also confirmed to be making an appearance.
It’s likely we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see specific characters and their stats, but it’s an incredibly exciting time to be a Final Fantasy fan. The MTG Universes Beyond set launches June 13, 2025.
