The CS2 Retakes game mode may soon be introduced, which is all about reclaiming a plant site with Terrorists already spawning on-site. Meanwhile, CTs are spawned on randomly set locations.
Files of the Retakes game mode are already in CS2's system. This paints a similar picture to when the other game modes were introduced in the game.
CS2 Retakes game mode to return
CS:GO introduced the Retakes game mode during Operation Broken Fang on December 3, 2020. When CS2 took over in 2023, many features were missing, such as Deathmatch, Arms Race, Wingman, as well as Retakes.
However, CS2 game files already have the necessary UI requirements, map spawn files, and game mode configuration ready for Retakes. The above post suggests Valve could take this long to release it due to recreation in the TypeScript. The developer made similar changes to the CS2 Arms Race and Wingman modes, which were reintroduced recently. This can only mean that it's only a matter of time before CS2 Retakes game mode is brought back, potentially with a major update.
In CS:GO, the Retakes game mode had three Terrorists defending the bomb site, while four CTs attempted to take the site back. Players would pick a loadout card where they could select weapons and equipment to use in the game; money and friendly fire were disabled. As soon as the Counter-Terrorists spawn and the bomb is planted, an indicator shows them the planted bomb site for the first five seconds and the mini-map also reflects the plant site.
Availability of kevlar, defusal kits, and other items changed as the rounds went on until one of the teams won eight rounds. A CS2 Retakes game mode will likely have the same set of rules and settings since reintroduced modes have not seen much change if at all.
The game still doesn't have other notable game modes, such as Demolition and Danger Zone, which are just as popular if not more. One of the most recent additions to the game was the CS2 Arms Race mode which dropped on February 6, 2024.
