The game arrives on August 29, 2024, for Nintendo's popular hybrid console. The story centers around the titular urban legend, an eerie man who offers crying girls a paper bag with a smiley face on it in exchange for their life. Following in the footsteps of the legend, a bunch of murders with victims having their heads covered must be investigated by the Utsugi Agency.
The project is helmed by none other than Yoshio Sakamoto, known for his work on the 2D Metroid entries, including the original NES release, the SNES sequel Super Metroid, and the Nintendo Switch successor Metroid Dread. He also helped produce the cult-classic Rhythm Heaven and WarioWare games across several Nintendo systems.
Sakamoto has worked on the previous Famicom Detective Club titles, including both the originals and the 2021 Nintendo Switch remakes. As such he brings his expertise to Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, which will be the first brand-new series entry since 1989.
While the Switch remakes received mixed reviews due to carrying over outdated game design aspects, the fact that this is an all-new entry should excite fans thanks to all the new possibilities in store.
