"It feels like I don't know how to win anymore" — Larssen on his struggles since 2023, Rogue's current form, and the quality of gameplay in the LEC

Rogue has been one of the weakest teams in the LEC 2024 season. Back-to-back playoff misses and a serious lack of proactive-ness have often led to this squad being called "one of the most boring teams" as well. While the lineup does have established and promising talent, it has simply not played impressively so far in 2024. However, a crucial win against Team Heretics in Week 3 of the 2024 Summer Split could be the start of a comeback for the Rogue roster.

Emil "Larssen" Larsson is one of the most established mid-laners in the LEC and has been with the organization in some capacity throughout his career in the LEC. Debuting in 2019, he quickly made a name for himself as an incredible control mage player and a fantastic late-game carry.

However, he has struggled on an individual level since 2023. After Rogue's win against Team Heretics, I had the great opportunity to have a chat with Larssen.

Rogue's Larssen talks about win against Team Heretics, Ivern pick, expectations for the upcoming matches, and more

Q: Hello Larssen. Congratulations on this very important win. How are you feeling right now?

Larssen: I don't feel too great. Usually, I feel better after wins these days since they don't happen that often, but today, I don't feel that great because I didn't play that well. I should have carried this game way easier. I am not too happy today, but we had to win at some point, right? So, I should be happy but I am not really satisfied with my gameplay today.

Q: Rogue started off with a solid early game but faltered a little bit in the mid-game. What went wrong during the mid-game for Rogue today?

Larssen: Honestly, I needed to go to the bathroom. I couldn't really focus that well so I had to pause the game. That was probably the main issue. We also didn't make things happen with the lead we had.

Q: Rogue has always been a very reactive team, and this has been the biggest point of criticism. However, we saw some signs of proactivity and solid teamfighting when it mattered. How happy are you with the overall performance as a team today?

Larssen: I think the team played very well today. I am very happy with how they played. However, as I said, I didn't play that well. I think the team carried me. Next week, we have two easier games. Of course, no game is easy, but we have easier opponents left, so I think we have a good chance of making it to playoffs.

Q: There have also been talks about Rogue being more proactive in scrims and not being able to translate that on stage. Do you think this win can help the team be more confident in playing aggressively in the upcoming matches?

Larssen: Scrims have been pretty bad lately so I hope we don't bring out our scrim performance *laughs*. Usually, we have had like good scrims, but lately, it's been pretty bad. We are just aiming for the stage buff.

Q: We saw Rogue pick Ivern today after banning it in recent games. It definitely felt like a difference-maker in a lot of the important teamfights. What was the rationale behind the Ivern pick today?

Larssen: Ivern is pretty weak early, but he scales very well. We thought it would be a good pick against Heretics because they don't really have the strongest laners, and we didn't think Jankos would abuse the fact we picked Ivern.

That's why we felt that it was a good game for it (Ivern), where we could get through the early game pretty easily. If you can get through the early game and get Ivern into late-game teamfights, then he is a strong pick.

Q: It's been a rough 2023 and 2024 for you as an individual. Has the string of poor performances affected you mentally, or has it helped you find motivation to get back to your peak form from 2020-2022?

Larssen: My goal is to definitely get back to the Larssen everyone knows. I want to get back to being in the top three at minimum. It's been very rough. Sometimes, it feels like I don't know how to win anymore because we are losing so much. It has definitely been very hard for my mental. I always try to be confident on game day every time. I am sure things will turn around, eventually.

Q: How has it been working with Zoelys so far?

Larssen: I think he is a very talented player on an individual level. However, as a team, we have been pretty bad, so it's quite hard for a rookie support to come into the LEC and look good. If the team is not performing well, it's not easy to play at all as a rookie support.

We need to help him teach the game and carry him, but we have not done a good job at it, therefore it's pretty hard for him. I think he is a very talented player who can become very good, so I still believe in him.

Q: The quality of gameplay in the LEC has been on a steady decline since 2021. As a veteran of the league, what do you think are some of the important factors contributing to this worrying downward slope of the league?

Larssen: I think it's a very hard question to give a proper answer to. Of course, if we knew the answer to these problems, we would have fixed it already. I think the Asian teams are just more talented. They also scrim against each other all the time so the players in the region learn from the best and improve.

For instance, if you scrim against T1 during the entire year, you will obviously become better. This just becomes a snowball effect, basically where the weaker teams in the LCK scrim the top teams and eventually get better. The LEC is just not good enough in that regard.

Q: Has there been any rookie player, especially in the mid-lane, this year that has impressed you?

Larssen: I can't really think of anyone specific. I have been very focused on the team and myself this year, as we have been struggling. I have barely focused on other teams and how they are doing. However, I think Vladi is a pretty talented player and I think he is very promising.

Q: Any thoughts that you would like to share with the fans supporting Rogue and you?

Larssen: Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us. It's been a tough time, so it means the world. During good times, the support is nice, but you are also winning, so it doesn't feel that needed. Now, during the rough times, when I get nice messages, it helps a lot. I hope we can make it to playoffs.
