Overwatch 2 6v6 mode: Everything we know so far

As mentioned before, Blizzard Entertainment is planning to try out two new experimental game modes, each having a different set of release dates.

The two new experimental modes are:

1) Overwatch 2 6v6 Role Queue

The 6v6 Role Queue is the classic mode in which it is mandatory to pick two heroes from each category: Tank, Support, and Damage. Once you pick a role, you will not be able to switch for the rest of the match.

This game mode will be playable from December 17, 2024, to January 7, 2025, during Overwatch Season 14. After this, it will be removed until developers make changes depending on community feedback. While the exact time for the update's arrival hasn't been revealed yet, based on previous trends, it will likely arrive on December 17, 2024, at 2 PM Eastern Time.

2) Overwatch 2 6v6 Min 1 - Max 3

The 6v6 Min 1 - Max 3 is an interesting mode in which each role requires at least one and a maximum of three heroes. An example of such a team composition would contain 3 Tanks, 2 Damage, and 1 Support.

Swapping your role in this mode will be tricky. The only way you can switch from a role is when all three roles still have at least one hero. For example, if you are the only Support hero in the team, you can't switch to another role as having at least one hero of each category is mandatory. However, if there are two Support heroes, you can switch to Damage or Tank.

This game mode will be available from January 7, 2025, to February 4, 2025. That means both of these game mode experiments will conclude within Season 14, and are likely to arrive as permanent game modes during Season 15.

FAQs

1) Is the 5v5 mode getting removed from Overwatch 2?

No, both 5v5 and 6v6 will be available to play. Overwatch 2 6v6 modes are only being added as an experiment to get feedback from the community.

2) Which maps can we play in Overwatch 2 6V6?

The official X post does not mention any specific maps, indicating that all the maps and game modes will be accessible.

3) Why was 6v6 mode removed from Overwatch?

While there has been no official statement from Blizzard Entertainment regarding this, players speculate that this was due to constant complaints about Tank heroes. Breaking two Tanks shields took a lot of time and used to frustrate players immensely.
