In a recent X post, Overwatch 2's Game Director, Aaron Keller, revealed that a self-healing feature might be introduced for all heroes in the game's roster. This bold claim has seemingly taken the entire community by quite a bit of surprise. In the previous rendition of the game, no role could self-heal. As we stepped into the game's sequel in 2022, Supports were provided with this minor tweak to help improve the game's general sense of balance.

This article will explore all possible avenues that will open up with the potential introduction of self-healing in Overwatch 2. For a detailed brief on the matter, read below.

Marking the first Director's Take blog for the year, Aaron Keller made a major announcement teasing the possibility of self-healing for all heroes in Overwatch 2. The vision of the Game Director was aimed at easing the overburdened nature of Support heroes in the game.

Keller proceeds to comment that these changes will be making their way into the live build of the game with the launch of Season 9, which is expected to be released sometime around February 13, 2024.

In the dev blog, Aaron Keller said:

"In Season 9, both Tank and Damage heroes will get a modified, tuned-down version of the Support self-healing passive. This should give non-Support players more options in terms of sustaining themselves."

While almost every character will benefit from this addition, Reinhardt and other brawl-centric heroes will unfortunately not share the same fate as dive heroes. This will strongly enable characters such as Sombra, Winston, Wrecking Ball, Tracer, and other mobile Heroes to have a greater impact in their matches. It will further open avenues for experimental compositions, leading to drastic changes in the meta.

However, as indicated by Aaron Keller, Support players greatly benefit from the addition of a self-healing mechanic for all roles. Even a little pressure being taken off will allow Support players to focus on the offensive, enabling them to be more than a mere 'healbot' in the game.

What more can we expect from Season 9 of Overwatch 2?

Other than the major self-heal mechanic for all roles, Overwatch 2 fans will be excited to know that the entire Competitive system will be overhauled in the upcoming season. This was initially teased during Blizzcon 2023, creating massive hype among the fans.

Furthermore, new UI changes are set to be implemented to help players make informed decisions concerning going on the offensive or staying defensive. Similar to the PvE layout, players will have an accurate display of their teammates' health pool, ultimate charge and economy, and other visual indicators visible on their screen.

The developers have also teased the prospect of map-voting possibly coming in the game. However, nothing beyond that was discussed in the developer blog.
