After the Overwatch 2 rank changes in Season 9, you either gain or lose progress on your rank promotion progress bar. This progression bar gets updated after you finish a competitive match. Winning consecutive matches will also grant you additional progress, and you can quickly rank up.

However, if you keep losing matches, you will be demoted. When you are subject to a rank demotion, there is also a demotion protection to give you another chance to win.

Moreover, if you're coming back after taking a long break, you have to play 10 placement matches to get your rank. Depending on the results of the 10 placement matches, you will be placed in any rank that best suits your skills.
