The release of Marvel Rivals made the Overwatch 2 player count plummet quite hard. The former has been a great hit among players who are fans of the hero shooter genre. Soon after the title's release back in December 2024, Overwatch 2 has not been doing well in terms of player count, although Blizzard has released a new season.
After NetEase Games revealed their upcoming character lineup, a Marvel Rivals player on X, @zerowontmiss, stated the cause of Overwatch 2’s downfall.
"Overwatch will die soon because it will never be able to compete against #MarvelRivals."

Marvel Rivals player points out Overwatch 2’s biggest flaw is not releasing new characters frequently
As mentioned previously, @zerowontmiss stated that the decline of Overwatch 2’s player count is caused by the developers not releasing enough characters frequently. Since Blizzard’s hero shooter title has been out for a long time, players are well-versed with most of the characters the title offers. Therefore, if the devs introduce new characters in the game consistently, players will be invested in learning about the Heroes and mastering their play style.
If Blizzard constantly releases Heroes every season, many players who have quit the game might come back to try the new character out, which could restore the title’s former glory. However, unlike Marvel Rivals, Blizzard has to create their Heroes, which usually takes a significant amount of time. Therefore, the inconsistent release of new characters in Overwatch 2 is quite justifiable.
As per @zerowontmiss, the devs of this hero shooter title from NetEase Games have thousands of characters that they can pick and introduce to the players.
"While Overwatch has to create new characters, Marvel literally own over 7,000 characters they can add in Marvel Rivals in a time span of generations."
This easily makes Marvel Rivals a better option to choose since players know that the devs have enough Heroes they can consistently release in the upcoming years.
