Pokemon Sword and Shield have brought back a feature that was available in every other Pokemon Game: In-game trades. Some Pokemon are not so easy to find but you can trade a commonly found Pokemon for them and some are not available at all.
Every Pokemon you get by trade in-game will have a permanent nickname that you cannot change. They also come holding an item and have a specific Ability which is also not so common.
Trading with real people has become a lot easier than it has in the past. You simply need to connect your Nintendo Switch online in order to find a trading partner through the Trading Link. But if you are interested in the in-game trades, here are some NPCs that trade Pokemon with you in Sword and Shield.
1. Bunnelby for Skwovet

Nickname: Cheekers
Location: Motostoke Poke Center
Level: 10
Ability: Cheek Pouch
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 1
The first trade you can get is for a Skwovet. You have to go to the Motostoke Poke Center and to the right, an NPC will trade you a Skwovet for a Bunnelby. Skwovets are very common so you may not find this trade all that worthwhile.
2. Galarian Meowth for Meowth
Nickname: Cash
Location: Turrfield Gym
Level: 18
Ability: Technician
Items: Sitrus Berry
Dynamax Level: 1
This trade is currently the only way you can get the original Kantonian Meowth in Sword and Shield. Galarian Meowth is commonly available and evolves into Perrseker. In order to get Meowth and Persian, go to the Turrfield Gym and talk to the short NPC in a blue shirt right next to the green path and give him your Galarian Meowth.
3. Minccino for Cottonee
Nickname: Candyfloss
Location: Hulbury
Level: 23
Ability: Prankster
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 1
You can get a Cottonee from Hulbury in the open market place. She is sitting on a bench just below the stairs and will request a Minccino for a Cottonee. Cottonee evolves into Whimsicott with a Sun Stone.
4. Toxel for Togepi
Nickname: Snips
Location: Hammerlock
Level: 25
Ability: Serene Grace
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 1
Toxel is available in many areas but you can also get one for free. Togepi, on the other hand, is not too easily found. You can find some in Bridge Field or Max Raid Battles but if you can't find them around, your best bet is to trade with the NPC outside Hammerlocke's Vault.
5. Maractus for Hatenna/Impidimp
Hatenna (Sword) -
Nickname: Fringe
Location: Stow-on-Side
Level: 30
Ability: Unburden
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 1
Impidimp (Shield) -
Nickname: Peepers
Location: Stow-on-Side
Level: 30
Ability: Prankster
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 1
Go to the far left building in Stow-on-Side. Climb up the ladder and you'll see someone sitting on the roof. Talk to him and he will ask for a Maractus in exchange for Hatenna in Sword and Impidimp in Shield.
6. Galarian Yamask for Unova Yamask
Nickname: Masky
Location: Ballonlea
Level: 35
Ability: Mummy
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 2
In Ballonlea Gym, there is a kid in an Eevee costume who will trade you a Galarian Yamask for a Unova Yamask. Just like Meowth, this is currently the only method in-game to have a regular Yamask which evolves into Cofagrigus. The Galarian Yamask is a different type and evolves into Runerigus.
7. Vanillish for Throh/Sawk
Throh (Sword) -
Nickname: Reddos
Location: Circhester
Level: 37
Ability: Inner Focus
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 2
Sawk (Shield) -
Nickname: Blubop
Location: Circhester
Level: 37
Ability: Inner Focus
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 2
Go to the south of Circhester and you'll find an ice cream stall. The NPC will request for a Vanillish and trade you a Throh in Sword and a Sawk in Shield. Wild Throh is exclusive to Shield and Wild Sawk is exclusive to Sword. So you'll have to either trade in-game or trade from the other version.
8. Obstagoon for Kantonian Mr. Mime
Nickname: Mymo
Location: Spikemuth
Level: 40
Ability: Soundproof
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 1
Near the Spikemuth Battle Area, you'll find a lone stall with a Team Yell member standing there. Talk to him and he'll give you a Kantonian Mr. Mime for an Obstagoon. Just like Yamask and Meowth, this is the only way in Sword and Shield to get a Kantonian Mr. Mime.
9. Duraldon for Frosmoth
Nickname: Linear
Location: Wyndon
Level: 50
Ability: Heavy Metal
Items: None
Dynamax Level: 3
In Wyndon, go east from the stadium and go four houses down. You'll find an NPC who wants a Frosmoth for a Duraldon. This trade is the hardest to pull off because you'll need to evolve Snom (which requires high-level friendship and to level at night) as Frosmoth is only available in Max Raid Battles in the wild.
But the payoff is quite big as the Duraldon comes with a Dynamax Level of 3, the highest in all the in-game trades. You won't have to spend 3 Dynamax Candies to make it stronger and Duraldon also has a strong Gigantamax form.
