"RIP midladder forever": Clash Royale community reacts to Supercell giving away Mega Knight Evolution for free

Clash Royale recently announced that the new Mega Knight Evolution will be handed out for free. While some players are glad that the first Legendary Evolution is free, others believe that an abundance of the new Evolution will create changes that could reshape the current meta for the worse.

Notably, this is the first time that Clash Royale is giving away the latest Evolution for free. Until now, players had to purchase and complete the Diamond Pass to acquire enough shards for the latest additions.

Reddit user u/toiletclogger2671 noted that this change would doom the mid-ladder, which houses most of the player base. This hints that Mega Knight is already heavily used and the free evo will make his presence even more noticeable. They said:

Another user, yumm-cheseburger, noted that the usage of Inferno Tower and Inferno Dragon is about to skyrocket. They said:

"Inferno drag/tower use rate."

These Inferno cards are the best counters to the Mega Kight Evolution. Additionally, Inferno Dragon cannot stop Mega Knight Evolution from dealing some tower damage.

User Curious_Explorer9 observed that 'jumping monkeys' will be everywhere in the mid-ladder. It references the jumping-splash attack that the Mega Knight often carries out. They said:

Previously, the free-to-play community had to collect shards from the Season shop and spend Wild Shards, which are difficult to collect, to unlock evos. In most cases, for those unwilling to spend real money, it would sometimes take months to get an evolution.

Why Clash Royale fans have mixed reactions towards free Mega Knight Evolution

While most players appreciate the announcement, the response towards the new evolution has not been entirely positive. To understand why, we need to look at the impact that Mega Knight has on Clash Royale.

Firstly, Mega Knight is one of the most used troops in the mid-ladder. The 'mid-ladder' is an umbrella term, coined by the community to denote arenas that fall between 4000-7000 trophies. A majority of the playerbase is in the mid-ladder, making it highly competitive and everchanging. It is also impacted by minute changes due to its dynamic nature.

Mega Knight is a versatile card that offers good value for elixir spent, leading to the overuse of this card. On average, of every five Clash Royale games in the mid-ladder, two or three will feature the Mega Knight in at least one of the decks. This over-usage has overexposed the community to the Mega Knight.

A section of the community is worried that distributing Mega Knight Evolution for free can spike its usage even more. This would make the game repetitive and uninteresting to those who don't like dealing with Mega Knight.
