With the Nintendo Switch 2 continuing to be a hot-button topic in the games industry, Ruffy and the Riverside developers have suggested that the upcoming indie sandbox platformer is also coming to Nintendo's next-gen platform. This surprise information comes alongside a brand-new trailer and an updated Steam page for the game.
This isn't the first time a studio has confirmed that their game will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it proves we are inching ever closer to an official announcement. Here are the full details.
Ruffy and the Riverside is planned for release on PC and consoles, including Nintendo Switch 2
The game follows a cute 2D mascot in a 3D world who gains the power of SWAP, allowing them to swap their surroundings. As an example, players can use a nearby set of vines on a cliffside to turn a waterfall into a bunch of climbable vines. Alternately, ice platforms floating in a water body can be used to freeze it, allowing the hero to walk across it.

This should make for some truly immersive-sim-esque puzzles and ingenious platforming segments. Akin to Super Mario Odyssey or even another indie title The Plucky Squire, players will also engage in 2D levels draped over 3D assets. Encapsulated in a colorful and charming art style, this whimsical adventure across Riverside has been in development for a while now.
As such, Ruffy and the Riverside will finally arrive early next year for PC (via Steam), PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switches. The full press release has the following to say:
German indie studio Zockrates Laboratories and US publisher Phiphen Games are excited to share the completely revamped Steam page for Ruffy and the Riverside. The lovingly hand-drawn platformer is rolling out Q1 2025 on PC (Steam), Xbox One & Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and...Nintendo Switch(es)!

While the multiple "Nintendo Switch(es)" may look like references to other existing Nintendo Switch family consoles, like the Lite and OLED, no distinction is made for other systems like the PS5 Pro. As such, this is no doubt confirmation that developer Zockrates Laboratories is working on a rendition for the next-gen platform too.
That said, it should be noted that this is by no means a concrete confirmation that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released around that period as Nintendo has previously stated that the next-gen console will not launch before the fiscal year is over, which is until March 2025. However, fans can officially look forward to a debut reveal before that deadline.
This is the second indie title that has been confirmed to be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 after Playtonic Games announced the same last month. In the meantime, players can check out the official Ruffy and the Riverside Steam page to wishlist the game.
