Pulling dupes in Zenless Zone Zero is not really necessary. The devs at HoYoverse are known for walling some character progression behind gacha mechanics. In their previous hits like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, there have been similar mechanics that reward players for multiple copies of a single character by unlocking their full potential or new abilities.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the same system has also been introduced in Zenless Zone Zero. That said, pulling dupes is not necessary in Zenless Zone Zero. In most cases, the base version of a high-ranked character is enough for the game.

Why do you need to pull dupes in Zenless Zone Zero?
Zenless Zone Zero has a mechanic called Mindscape Cinema. It is similar to the Constellation system from Genshin Impact, where you need to use six copies of a single character to unlock their full potential. In Zenless Zone Zero, using the dupes of a character rewards you with Agent Focus.
Agent Focus unlocks a character/Agent’s new powers and abilities. If you have six copies of a character, and you use them in the Mindscape Cinema to gain Agent Focus, you will be able to upgrade existing passive and active abilities and unlock new skills. For Example, if you each Mindscape Cinema level 6 (MC6) for Ellen, you will unlock her “The Feast Begins” ability.

This ability can boost her attacks for a limited period and give certain attacks more than 200% power. Other than unlocking new abilities and upgrading existing ones, pulling dupes, and leveling up the Mindscape Cinema, it also unlocks the secret artwork of characters. These artworks are usually the same as the original, the only difference being that they feature the character in more revealing clothing.
I believe pulling dupes shouldn’t be your focus in Zenless Zone Zero, as even with a team of fully maxed-out MC6 A-tier characters, you can’t compete with a team of S ranks. So unless you want those spicy Mindscape Cinema artworks or new abilities, pulling dupe isn’t worth it in Zenless Zone Zero.
Also pulling dupes is not easy, especially for A or S-tier characters. You will need many pulls to get a character to MC6, and after a while, you may be required to spend real-world money to make new pulls.
