In 2025, you'll finally get to play Skyblivion, the community-driven remaster of Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion in the Skyrim Engine. The idea of a 2025 release for this massive community project surfaced as an official promise from its makeshift development team last year. To wrap up the eve of the new year in 2025, the latest development showcase certainly cements the viability of that promise.

The game is far closer to the finish line than we would have guessed in 2024, but the Skyblivion dev team hasn't mentioned an exact release date quite yet.

At the time of writing, 93% of the Cyrodiilic worldspace (4603 of 4926 cells) has been created and furnished with environmental details to keep the trail interesting.

The frigid heights of Jerall and Valus mountains, the Colovian Highlands, Gold Coast along with Anvil, the Heartlands, the redwood Great Forest, the sprawling vineyards of West Weald, and the boglands of Blackwood have all been fully landscaped. The only thing that remains incomplete in Skyblivion right now is the city of Brevil in the Nibenay region, as well as the Nibenay Basin itself.

It's worth noting that all of these areas have not been fully navmeshed yet, which is a fancy way of saying NPCs cannot path around its terrain intelligently. However, navmeshing is not nearly as hard as terraforming and decorating these chunks of landscape, so that won't take very long to hit the finish line.

The Interior spaces aren't at the same level of completion by comparison. This includes all sorts of dungeons like forts, sewers, caverns, and never to forget the hellscapes you can enter through Oblivion Gates. Currently, only three out of 11 planned variants of the Oblivion Realm worldspace have been completed.

On top of that, a bunch of other unique realms are included in the Skyblivion project (Painted World, Boethiah's realm, Paradise, Vaermina's world and so on) that are nearly complete.

Creating these worlds are only half the battle; there's also 3D assets of a remaster's standard to populate them with. Thankfully, here too, the Skyblivion community is close to the finish line, with 2354 out of 2508 planned original objects (including everything from cutlasses to curtains) modelled and textured.

However, the most impressive jump in progress since 2023 has been in reimplementing the quests of Oblivion. Out of 20, 18 Main Quests have already entered the first pass test, meaning they are in technically sound state awaiting further QA from bug-testing. A lot of the faction quests and sidequests are also in that technically complete stage, including the entirety of the Dark Brotherhood questline and all Daedric quests.

When is Skyblivion coming?

The gold road to Skyblivion's release is well within sight. The December 2024 development diary doubled down on the 2025 release goal, but did not promise an exact release date. However, given the heavy lifting has already been done in most fronts of this community remaster, a hopeful estimation of release date would put it sometime in Q2 2025.

Meanwhile, mum's the word for Microsoft-Zenimax when it comes to rumors of an official Unreal Engine 5 remake of Oblivion all these years later.
