Stardew Valley weapons can be upgraded to make everyday tasks faster, combat more efficient, and resource-gathering easier. These upgrades can be applied using the Forge in the Volcano Dungeon. Thanks to the Forge, you can have an axe that never needs repairs, a sword that has an increased chance to deal critical hit, or a pickaxe that mines with more efficiency.

In this guide, we will cover how to unlock Stardew Valley weapon forging, the different types of upgrades available to each weapon, and the best ones for combat.

The Forge becomes available after reaching the Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island. Once you make your way to the 10th floor, you'll find the Forge, where you can use Cinder Shards to upgrade your tools.

Stardew Valley weapon forging significantly boosts your abilities, allowing you to explore deeper levels of the dungeons with greater confidence.

If you defeat enemies within the Volcano Dungeon in Stardew Valley, there is a chance that Cinder Shards will drop. Magma Duggy, Magma Sprite, Magma Sparker, and False Magma Cap have a 40% to 50% chance of dropping a single Cinder Shard.

Cinder Shard can also be obtained by mining Cinder Shard nodes with a pickaxe. The likelihood of finding Cinder Shard nodes increases in deeper levels of the dungeon.

With your Cinder Shards in hand, you can head to the Forge and begin forging. Forging requires a certain amount of Cinder Shards and a gem. Here’s a list of each gem and its effects:

Gems

Effects

Aquamarine

Increases critical hit chance by 4.6% per level

Amethyst

Increases knockback effect by 1 per level.

Emerald

Increases weapon speed by 2 on the first and third levels and by 3 on the second level.

Jade

Increases critical hit damage by 10% at each level.

Ruby

Increases attack power by 10% per level.

Topaz

Increases defense by 1 per level.

Diamond

Grants any random upgrade.

Once you’ve obtained the required materials, follow these steps to upgrade your weapon:

  1. Interact with the Forge.
  2. Select the weapon you wish to upgrade.
  3. Choose a gem from your inventory.
  4. Offer the required amount of Cinder Shards and gem of your liking. The cost for the upgrade is 10 shards for level 1, 15 shards for level 2, and 20 shards for level 3.

You can use a gem of the same type to stack its effects. For example, upgrading your sword twice with Jade will increase your critical hit damage by 20%.

Unforging Stardew Valley weapons

The Forge can also be used to unforge a weapon. Simply press the red X symbol in the forge menu. Doing so will return the weapon to its original state. That said, gems and some Cinder Shards will be lost in the process.

Ruby: This gemstone provides a straightforward +10% damage boost. A level-three weapon upgraded using just Ruby can have a 30% increased attack power, making difficult enemies much easier.

Emerald: This gem grants +2 weapon speed per level. Stacking two Emeralds can bring your weapon to +5 speed, which makes fighting hordes of enemies much easier.

Aquamarine + Ruby: This combination provides increased chances of critical hit and attack, making late-game exploration more comfortable.

Amethyst + Emerald: Combining these two gems can give you increased speed and knockback ability to your weapon. This can be very handy in creating space when swarmed by enemies.

Infinity weapons in Stardew Valley

To obtain an Infinity weapon, you'll need 20 Cinder Shards, a Galaxy Weapon (Galaxy Sword, Dagger, or Hammer), and three Galaxy Souls. Once you have all the required components, head to the Forge and use it to transform your Galaxy weapon into its Infinity form.

Infinity weapons have significantly higher attack power compared to their base Galaxy forms. These weapons do not break, eliminating the need for constant repairs. Any previous upgrades or enchantments on your Galaxy weapon will carry over to its infinity form.

How to obtain Galaxy Souls:

  1. Can be purchased from Mr. Qi for 40 Qi gems after completing the Mysterious Qi quest.
  2. Galaxy Souls can be purchased from Island Trader.
  3. Big Slimes have a chance to drop Galaxy Souls. These slimes spawn in Dangerous Mines, Mr. Qi’s Danger in the Deep Quest, and Skull Cavern Invasion questline.

The best way to discover the perfect Stardew Valley weapon setup is to experiment. Make sure to try different combinations of upgrades on your weapons to see what works best for your combat style.
