Some games may not require likable characters or a compelling plot arc to generate robust emotions from players. Some games, on the other hand, just do this through their ambiance, graphic design, and soundtrack. Sword of the Sea is the newest game revealed for the genre and, like Journey, it will stir mountains of emotions for us as well.
What is Sword of the Sea?
Sword of the Sea, announced during the 2023 May PlayStation Showcase, is the newest game in development by Giant Squid. Like its previous titles, Abzu and Pathless, Sword of the Sea seems to be a "meditative, exhilarating, and introspective" experience that will immerse players in an evocative gaming environment unlike any they've seen before. Indeed, Matt Nava, founder and creative director of Giant Squid, said, "Sword of the Sea is our most ambitious game to date."
What happens in Sword of the Sea?
You play as a Wraith in an "abandon realm" where the "terrain flows in constant waves." Resurrected in this bleak setting, Wraith is charged with restoring life to this planet of buried ruins and vibrantly different cultures. "Surf through sinking tombs, mysterious shipwrecks, and petrified battlefields - and bring giant shoals of fish and creatures back in the process," adds Matt Nava. "However, be warned: this land is also home to massive leviathans that will obstruct your path."
Sword of the Sea Gameplay
According to Matt Nava, a new gameplay element is "a brand-new movement mechanic: the Hoversword." The Hoversword acts like a snowboard, skateboard, and hoverboard all in one." Players may generate tremendous amounts of momentum with this new gameplay concept. They may use it to explore, travel, and destroy up the wave-like landscape and "skatepark-like ruins."
"Combining the speed and flow of skating games with the emotional core and exploration you expect from a Giant Squid title," says Matt Nava. If Giant Squid understands one thing, it's how to mix mediums to get people's attention.
Giant Squid is creating Sword of the Sea. Their sole purpose as a studio is to elevate games to the status of an art form rather than a pastime.
"We believe that video games are more than just a recreational activity; they are an artistic medium capable of providing beautiful, meaningful, and timeless experiences to a diverse range of people." Our ambition is to develop games that realize that potential. We seek to produce creative and deeply affecting experiences that will inspire players, challenge convention, and push the frontiers of interactive entertainment into new and fascinating territories."
